The Contour abs belt - does it really work? Should I buy one?

Warning - if you have seen the contour abs belt infomercials on tv and are thinking of buying one, please read our review first!

The contour abs belt is very popular, with millions of Americans seeing the infomercials on TV and buying one. Its the biggest selling electronic ab toning belt on the market.

Contour Abs belt is essentially another contraption using an electric current to make your muscles contract. In this incarnation, it's a belt with a battery pack you slap on around your waist while watching TV, reading or otherwise just sitting around. To ensure conductivity, you have to apply and replace gel pads against your skin as well.

The ads claim it's a system developed by Swiss medical professionals and is "used all over Europe", although there are few specifics on this. The Contour people further claim to have a revolutionary, "re-engineered" approach to electromuscular stimulation, although how this product differs from the other EMS units that have been around for 30 years is not explained in much detail either.

The big question that everyone wants to know is: "does the Contour Abs Belt actually work?"

We have provided plenty of information here for you to learn more about the contour abs belt, and also the experiences of Michael from Illinois who ordered a contour belt and then returned it later  and bought the flex belt.

Please read the information in this lens, and don't fall for the hype of the contour abs belt tv infomercial.

Does the contour abs belt really work?

More in depth information about the contour ab belt

How do ab belts work?
The brain controls muscles by sending tiny electrical impulses through your nervous system. Once the impulse has made its way to the correct muscle, it contracts until the brain ceases to send the impulse.

Simply put, the Contour belt taps into the body's electric system and zaps your abdominals with a weak electrical current. The muscle can't tell this impulse from the ones coming from your brain, so they contract as if you had just made an effort to flex your abs. Repeat again and again, and you get something of an isometric workout.

Does the contour abs actually work?

The biggest selling ab toning device on the market in the USA, the contour abs belt is famous because of the infomercials used to promote it. There are all sorts of claims in the infomercial, and if you've seen it you could be forgiven for thinking all you have to do is strap on this ab belt and magically your waistline will decrease, the pounds will simply melt away leaving you with amazing slim, sculpted abdominal muscles.

Unfortunately, its not just that easy!
The contour ab belt DOES 'work' in the sense that like all other electronic toning devices, it will cause your ab muscles to contract and work while you are wearing it. It can therefore help to build stronger ab muscles.

But - the contour abs belt (and no other ab belt for that matter) will NOT cause you to lose weight on its own.

To acheive the results you want, you will have to exercise and eat well to burn off the excess fat covering up your abs. Once you have done this, then and only then will you start to see the results of the ab belt you choose to buy as your ab muscles begin to show.

Is the contour abs good quality?
We consider the contour abs belt to be of poor qaulity, given its total price of around $220. It is not a particularly up to date design, and still uses batteries to power the device instead of a rechargeable power pack like its competitors.

In additon, it seems difficult to find a phone number for the company, and customer service is not the best - it can take up to 6 weeks for you to receive the contour belt after you place an order!

The manufacturing of the Contour Abs also seemed to be of a poorer quality than the other products we have tested, which is particularly worrying due to the limited time available to claim your money back and the short warranty period.

We found that the Contour Abs Belt did produce results but not at the same speed as the other belts out there for similar prices. The pulse strength felt weaker than the other products, as well as the contractions. It was also a little uncomfortable compared to the Flex Belt which is similarly priced and produced better results.
Another negative compared with both the Flex Belt and Flex Enervive is that the Contour Belt runs on 4 AAA batteries and not a rechargeable power supply. This will be particularly frustrating if you will be using your belt on a daily basis as they may need replaced regularly! In short, the Contour Belt did not match up to the standards of its most similar-priced rival the Flex Belt in terms of quality, performance, ease of use, customer satisfaction and service.

We feel that the Flex Belt ab toner offers much better value for money, quality, a better design and great customer service.

The Contour Ab Belt (a.k.a. Contour Abs or Contour Core Sculpting System) is available on a 'free trial' for $14.95, plus four monthly recurring payments of $49.95, but doesn't offer nearly the quality of construction and performance or ease of operation of the other belts.

Since the price is nearly the same as the Flexbelt, the Flexbelt is obviously better value for your money. Check out our comparison to see how you think the quality and features compare. After ordering, it took 22 days for the Contour Belt to arrive, which we find very bad given the time limits on the 'free trial'. There is also once again no money back guarantee offered, which is of slight concern given that this ab belt is the same price as the Flexbelt! Overall we experienced faster results with the Flex Belt.

If you absolutely, positively hate abdominal crunches, you may find this product useful. Just bear in mind that it will work primarily by strengthening the abdominal muscles, not magically melting off fat.

There are also complaints about shady business practices, ranging from unauthorized credit card charges to inferior product quality coupled with inept customer service. Thill Logistics, the parent company that carries the Contour brand, has an "Unsatisfactory" rating by the Wisconsin Better Business Bureau.

The contour abs belt: A users experience

The experience of someone who bought the contour abs belt

"You're sure to have seen the TV infomercials for the contour abs toning belt, and they look great don't they?

I thought so, so I ordered one by paying $14.95 on their website for a 'free trial'. Shipping is incredibly slow and my order took over 3 weeks to arrive, which annoyed me to start with as it means the free trial period is expired before I even got the ab belt!

When I saw the Contour Belt I didn't think it looked like very good quality and in fact it actually broke after only 3 weeks. I returned it, expecting a refund only to find they kept charging my credit card $49.95 each month (they split the cost as its expensive, $49.95 for 4 months).

After a lot of phone calls i managed to get my refund, and this time did some research online - I ended up buying a flex belt ab toner as it seems to be the one that everyone rates best for quality etc.

I'm really happy with the flex belt, and I just wanted to make this list so that others don't make the same mistake i did - do your research online before you buy a contour abs belt!

Don't make the same mistake I did with the contour abs!"
