Controlling Asthma - Tips on How to Control Asthma and References for Asthma Control
This is a part of the Asthma Information Series.
OK, so now you know, that there is no cure for asthma. Now what? No worries, you can control it. Controlling asthma means not letting attacks trigger by applying some methods, which this page is all about. This page will teach you how to control your asthma, by giving you tips and pointers on asthma control. Remember: If you can't kill a giant, the next best thing is to put it to sleep!
A Question About You and Your Asthma
Before We Start The COntrolling Asthma Information
Question: How severe is your asthma?
Controlling Asthma Tip #1
Avoid Your Asthma Triggers
Well the first pointer would be to identify which causes you to have an asthma attack, which are called asthma triggers, and just avoid them. Triggers can be one or more of the following:
* indoor allergen, like pet hairs, furniture stuffing, carpet, lint from cloths
* some food, like chicken, eggs or fish
* the smoke from food being cooked
* dust and pollution
* pollen, fine sand or soil
* commercial chemicals, like acetone, glue or paint
* sudden change of weather
* some medication, like aspirin
* strong emotional stress, especially the negative ones, like extreme anger, fear or sadness
* physical exertion
* colds, cough and other breathing diseases also trigger asthma

Which Ones Are Your Triggers???
Which ones are your triggers? Mine are cat hair and dust.
If you do not know what triggers your asthma to attack, then you can employ these suggestions:
Keep an asthma notebook. Every time you recover from an asthma attack, backtrack and list all the activities you engaged on, and try to see if you can associate those with any the triggers enumerated. Repeat. This is effective, but can take long (and not easy).
Another way to identify your trigger is to get tested for allergies. In most cases, the things you are allergic on also triggers your asthma. But this is not always.
The last, surefire way, is to monitor your lung activity, using a peak flow meter. It will tell you if your lungs are working extra hard, and that is a proof that you are exposed to your asthma trigger.

Controlling Asthma Tip #2
Constant Consultation
You saw this coming. This is also essential in controlling asthma.
Aside from getting your prescription drugs, the best benefit of consulting your doctor regularly is that you can get advices every now and then.
Ask questions. Education for one's disease, especially the chronic ailments demand continuous effort, and not just one time information gathering.
Did You Know???
That you are paying your doctor to speak up, and it is their duty to answer your question no matter how silly you think it might be? Ask that question. The doc is your best friend!
For controlling asthma, the physician will probably give you maintenance medicine for you to take on a regular basis. These are mostly in the canister based spray which you will inhale while puffing. These are called inhalers. This video will teach you how to properly use the inhaler, so you won't waste the expensive meds and you can maximize the efficacy of each dose.
Thanks to National Jewish for letting me use their amazing videos. They responded so quickly. I am in awe.
Controlling Asthma Tip #3
Don't be afraid to explore other things that help
In controlling asthma, there are other products and activities that help you gain control of your disease.
Exercises like yoga and swimming, for an instance are the most effective way of strengthening the lungs, by employing breathing techniques in performing these activities.
Buteyko Breathing Method works too, by quickly giving the body the much needed air to reduce asthma occurrences.
Controlling Asthma Tip #4
Strengthen Your Immune System
Have you noticed, that other breathing diseases, like cough and most commonly colds tend to trigger asthma? One way to lessen asthma attack episodes is to take care of your body and keep yourself from catching other diseases.
Controlling asthma also requires strengthening your immune system! How to strengthen your immune system?
Buy Cold-FX Multivitamins
* Exercise regularly - Hey, swimming and yoga will do! It's like hitting two birds with one stone!
* Eat the right kinds of food and take vitamin supplements - Fruits especially citrus, veggies especially the green and orange, lean meat and fish, eggs, olive oil. Take multivitamins to supplement, but not substitute. (OK, I'll stop there -- I don't want to sound like Men's Health.)
* Drink enough liquid
* Get enough sleep
Bonus Tip - Controlling Asthma
Everyday, when you wake up, or before going to bed, face the mirror, look into your reflection's eyes, and say, "You are healthy, happy and asthma free!"
The Asthma Control Test - How Well Will You Do?
Controlling Asthma - How In Control Are You?

I encountered this test a few years ago from my doctor. This test is international, and is created by various health professionals and is tested on many asthmatics, like you and me. You take this test and it will determine how well your asthma is controlled, and this determines the treatment your doctors and nurses will give you.

- My middle son had really severe Asthma as a child and was in & out of the Emergency Room & hospital often...We tried every inhaler & nebulizer, all kinds of different medications, but the only thing that ever worked was predisone, which is not something little kids should take frequently... Then we discovered the wonders of Hot Chocolate...Cocoa has all the same anti-asthma properties of Asthma medications... Instead of running for the inhaler or nebulizer, He instead would drink a cup of hot chocolate whenever he felt wheezy...Soon he was off all asthma meds for 90% of his asthma attacks...Now an adult, he still uses hot chocolate as his first line of defense against his asthma.

Predisone? (For those who are reading, it is a strong type of steriod) Wow. That is for really severe asthma. I have moderate persistent Asthma and I'm complaining!
