Conventional VS. Natural Medicine

Join this conventional VS. alternative medicine debate...

Consider that long before the FDA was established and even before pharmaceutical companies began patenting prescription drugs, literally all health issues were treated with herbals and natural medicines. So, less than a hundred years ago, ALL health treatments originated from what is now called 'alternative medicine' or herbal' and natural remedies. Modern science and powerful marketing has now reversed how many perceive the very same natural remedies that were used for centuries as 'alternative' in favor of 'modern' approaches to health.

Conventional medicine has a role, yet conventional treatment relies primarily on powerful drugs which will only suppress symptoms. Alternative treatments or natural medicine works more directly with strengthening the immune system and in finding the cause (which may have origins related to stress, emotions, etc.), rather than just treating the physical symptoms. Risks and side effects from 'drug therapy' make alternative treatments much more appealing, especially for those who are taking the drugs yet remaining very sick and suffering from pain daily.

About Prescription Drugs and the FDA

Origins of prescription drugs and the research studies which support them often are controversial.

The relationship between drug companies and the FDA has which has changed significantly since the early 1990's. Funding for new drug research now comes primarily from the drug manufacturers themselves, rendering that 'research' to be totally self-serving. The approval process for new drugs is is faster and testing time shorter. Advertising of prescription medications has increased greatly in the last few years, which has greatly increased drug use and pressure on physicians to prescribe medications. Also, adverse drug reaction problems have become an overwhelming concern.

This is not to suggest that people stop taking medications important to their health, but rather to find the guidelines and tools to evaluate what they actually need in terms of prescription meds vs. effective alternative remedies.

Marketing and Natural Remedies

Beware of harmful synthetic substances.

synthetic vitaminsUnfortunately, another concern for consumers is that many companies manufacture nutritional supplements that are labeled 'natural' when they actually are made from harmful synthetic substances. Very few brands are actually made from whole foods and are of the high quality needed for optimal health. Thinking they are all the same, consumers usually opt for the lowest price, which not only won't help them but could even be harmful to health. Nutritional products are NOT all created equal. Learn more about the dangers of synthetic vitamins.

We are a part of this living planet, made from what it provides, therefore sustained by what it provides.
Modern medicine is useful in emergencies such as surgery or when we catch an infection BUT metabolic diseases are exactly that - the body malfunctioning due to lack of optimum levels of nutrients and the only thing to correct that is nutrients. Modern medicine simply hides the symptoms - it does not remove the problem. In fact, it is well documented that it causes even more problems.

I am an energy healer, I believe we have the power to heal ourselves. Drugs weaken that power, natural remedies strengthen it. The weaker you get the richer the drug companies get!

I could say a lot about this but I'll limit it to natural is always best. God knew what he was doing. Drug comanies screwed it up:)

With all the side effects of conventional medicine, I think seeking natural medicine when you can is the way to go.

LeanneChesser says:

I lean more toward natural medicine and certainly whole foods. Actually, I'm more for energy healing/spiritual healing. I do think, though, that conventional medicine is beneficial in some cases.

crosscreations says:

Conventional medicine practice consists of only TWO strategies: #1 drugs and #2 surgery. Both have their own inherent dangers and yet MDs refuse to accept alternative treatments that WORK!

No way, Monkeybrain!

ur wrong

crosscreations says:

Conventional medicine has a role to play that is needed. However to rely on conventional medicine alone can be risky.

I would vote for natural medicine. I'm into homeopathy and I don't really like conventional medicine. Some nice things about natural medicine are that the remedies have no side effects and do not cause addiction. Natural and homeopathic remediesftw. :]

Very informative lens. I understand natural medicine works in wonders but conventional medicines are also clinically tested. The side effects indeed are a pain in the neck. Just like the Fosamax side effects that its users have sustained during their therapy
