Converse: A Rock and Roll Legend

Converse: A Live Performance

The Converse brand has appealed to many different people. Though originally seen as the leader of basketball sneakers in the 1960's, claiming 80% of the basketball courts, in due time their appeal for being independent and counterculture soon began to appeal to a new crowd of people.

Although these shoes have become commonplace among many groups, such as the "preppy," the "hipsters," the "cool guys", the "anarchists," or "goths," Converse began to find a prominent place within the music industry.

After taking a walk through Converse history, I want to explore with you some of the different paths and rabbit trails awaiting their discovery. With hundreds of budding artists and famous musicians appearing in these iconic sneakers, the world of music has become the next stop on our journey through Converse history. Here we'll find a list of artists rocking these classic shoes.

A Converse and Music Quote

"Music speaks what cannot be expressed, soothes the mind and gives it rest, heals the heart and makes it whole, flows from heaven to the soul." ~ Angela Monet

Converse: A Fight for the Dead?

In 2007, Dr. Martens launched an ad campaign featuring many deceased artists wearing their boots. Many were appalled by this decision, outraged at the disgrace that they had caused.

Many questioned why rock-stars like Kurt Cobain and Joey Ramone who were better known for their love of Converse were pictured in these boots. Both Cobain's widowed wife, Courtney Love, and Joey Ramone's brother, Mickey Leigh, took to bringing down this disgrace on the image of their family.

As with all companies that advertise, there seems to be almost no limit as to what these guys will do to bring the rich and famous to don their product, make an appearance, and publicize their happiness for it. On top of that, usually they shovel fist-fulls of money to do so.

Yet in 2008, when Converse hit its 100th birthday and launched a huge selection of music icons prominently displayed on their shoes, many did not bat an eye to display these legends of rock on their shoes. Even some of the most cynical music fans can't ignore this great fit between Converse and Rock and Roll. What's more surprising is how many are willing backing this ad campaign.

Karen O of the "Yeah Yeah Yeahs", who has been known to turn down many offers in the past, seemed rather excited to promote her staple stage shoes. Maya Arulpragasam, aka MIA, who sang the lines "Trendsetters make things better/Don't sell out to be product pushers" ironically seemed quite compliant to push this product (doubly ironic that she happened to be wearing these when asked).
