My Traffic is Not Converting - Help!

Are you having trouble converting traffic? If you are an internet marketer, you will go through many different learning stages and travel on many different learning curves.

Converting Traffic is a term that refers to getting your website visitors to click on the links you want them to click on. That may be joining your mailing list, clicking on an adsense link or purchasing a product from you. The bottom line is, you want to convert traffic.

This webpage will explore some of the strategies I use to help a website of mine that is not converting traffic.

Relevance of your Traffic

The first thing you need to do when analyzing your site or landing page is decide whether the traffic you have coming to that page is relevant to the information you provide. You then have to decide whether these people are interested in the product you are trying to "sell".

Maybe the keywords you have selected are great for getting traffic, but people using those search terms are not likely buyers of the product. So the first step to getting your traffic to convert is to make sure you are getting the right traffic.

Do you actually have enough traffic?

PhotobucketMany times people feel their website or landing page is a failure because they cannot convert their traffic. But in reality, they just do not have enough traffic to convert. My goal is always to have around 300 hits to a landing page per day to determine whether it is successful.

This is not always the requirement. And it is worth repeating. 300 hits is not always absolutely necessary.

But, most times, this is the failing factor to a site. If you need help getting traffic to your site, first learn about keyword research.

Monitor All Your Traffic

A very important step in converting traffic is to monitor what your site visitors do once on your site. Not only that, but how did they get to your site? Did they use a certain keyword? Did they find you using an article you had written?

You must get inside the brain of your client/customer and know what they are looking for and truly understand what is making them search for that information. By using a program like Google Analytics to see what your visitors click out on will give you an idea of whether you should move around the links on your page.

Maybe you think everyone is clicking through to the affiliate page, but in actual fact, you also have a link to a friend's blog that is stealing all of your visitors. You need to know this information and act on it.

Another option is that maybe the "sales link" isn't obvious enough. Do not be afraid to tell customers to "click here". They need to be directed and if they are told to do something, they often will do it.

Split Testing

PhotobucketSplit testing is when you try two different things on the webpage to see what generates the most hits/revenue. I believe the concept is simply enough, but let me try and give an example.

Hypothetically, you are selling toothbrushes and have what you believe is a great website or landing page, however, not many people are buying toothbrushes from you. You are not sure what the "problem" is, but you think it may have to do with "Click here" link at the bottom of the page.

Currently, you simply have a picture of a pink toothbrush with the words "click here" over the toothbrush. You decide to eliminate the toothbrush all together and just see if the words work just as well.

You discover after a few days of testing that indeed the traffic is clicking to your product more. Perhaps it was the pink of the toothbrush, perhaps the picture was confusing and they didn't know where to click. What you do know is that more of your visitors are visiting your product.

(FYI, there are different types of software that can help you with this. However, simply by changing your webpage and monitoring the % of click through using Google analytics will provide you with the info you need).

What are your competitors doing?

Look at the PPC or Pay Per Click ads on google when you search your keyword. If there are many people advertising under that keyword, there is a great chance that they are making money (because it costs them to list there). What are they doing different than you? How can you learn from those sites?

Converting Traffic - Review style vs Testimonial

Maybe it's time for an entire site shakedown. Do you have a testimonial type of site or a review style page? What did your competitors have? Sometimes, a different angle may appeal more to your site visitors. If you were looking for this item, what would you want to see. Don't be afraid to try something new if you have looked at all the prior steps I have mentioned and not had any success.

Converting Traffic - Future sites and ideas

I strongly recommend that before you take a jump into your next niche, do some serious research. Before devoting a lot of time into site development, create a mini landing page on Squidoo or US Free Ads.

Test before you invest.

Simply set up a few (three or four) very targeted Squidoo lenses (or US Free Ads) with articles directing to these landing pages. Are you getting much traffic? Is there a demand for what you have to offer? If so, then get working on a new site with domain and all!

Is your site truly a dud?

You simply cannot convert your traffic?

PhotobucketAlthough I believe it is very hard to find a site that will not convert at least something... I can appreciate that people get frustrated at looking at something that has not produced any sales.

My suggestion for these types of sites is to use adsense on these sites and just try for any amount of revenue as possible. Slap it up and let it simmer.

Another small suggestion is to leave your mailing list opt in on the page so that you can at least collect emails which could also potentially lead to sales.

Interesting stuff and good food for thought. You've explained the concepts very well.

Anyhow, I just noticed your avatar on another page and thought, hmm, I haven't "seen" her around in a while, so I thought I'd stop by a lens I'd not read before and say hello. Besides, I always learn something new when I pay a visit. Hope all is well.

I have on my desk a sticky note with just one word, Relvance. That is the key to all. That and patience ;). I am just now getting into affiliate marketing and understand everything you presented so well here.

My next step is up the ante with my e-commerce site which is gaining momentum. A little bit of leg work will get it blazing!

    Thanks!
