Who Should Be President of the United States? Convince Me!

The 2008 presidential election is history here in the United States of America and Barack Obama won fair and square. A few weeks prior to the election, which was on November 4, 2008, I posed this challenge to visitors to this lens: "Let's say I'm an undecided voter. Who should I vote for? This is your opportunity to convince me to vote for your candidate!"

The lens received many responses, most emotion-charged and heartfelt. The lens received a nice number of visits, many from true undecided voters. It's nice to believe that a forum such as this one played a part in people making up their minds on such an important decision.

The comments remain below, at least for now, and it may be interesting to review them as time passes and Senator Obama becomes President Obama. People's opinions as they stated them here may or may not change; only time will tell. In the meantime, thank you to all who contributed, and may God continue to bless America.

You should vote for Obama-Biden because:

Nick says:

I agree with George, the scare tactics have been thrown out. Vote for me or else...that has always been the way of the GOP. Also, if you look at the tactics the McCain camp is using, this is EXACTLY what was used against him in the 2000 election against Bush. The Karl Rove tactics need to go and it is time for CHANGE!!! :)

Also I wanted to mention something, why does the GOP always try and use Obama's name against him, they are constantly using this again as a SCARE TACTIC. "His name represents a terrorist, he's a terrorist". If you want to talk about no experience Nathan look at Palin.

JustAls says:

Vote Obama for change... and not for McSame and Palin.... go back to Alaska to care for your son and pregnant daughter!! Take care of your family!

OBAMA FOR CHANGE!!

McCain & Palin = Bush Jr

George says:

McCain, like many republicans before him, has run a campaign focused on fear. This is a trick that Republicans love to use. Instead of telling you why you should vote for their candidate, they tell you why you should be afraid of the other guy. Just for an example of this look at the response of Geekahoy. Notice he writes "John McCain" and he writes "Barack Hussein Obama". Why? He believes that by repeating Hussein over and over again, you will believe that Obama is Muslim and of course, he wants you to be afraid. Republicans want you to be afraid. Don't let this kind of manipulation work anymore. Let them know that you will not fall for these fear tactics anymore. Put a stop to this 'below the belt' negative campaign tactics.

EuroSquid says:

There are MANY reasons to vote for Obama-Biden. For example, the USA is in a terrible mess right now. Economy is in a hole, the US image abroad is at its lowest ever, we have a crisis with the climate. It will take an intelligent leader to fix this mess. Bush, is not a bright man, McCain is not much brighter. Obama is smart. VERY smart. Obama graduted Magna Cum Lada from Harvard Law school. He graduated at the top of the the top law school in the country. Doesn't that tell you something? This is just one of the many reasons to vote for Obama.

thefluffanutta says:

We non-Americans don't want another Bush, so for our sake please don't vote for McCain!

Yeswecan says:

Would inject $75 billion into the economy through tax cuts and direct spending.” I prefer tax cuts to refunds, because tax refunds just seem like treating the symptom–why is the government taxing us that money in the first place if they’re just going to give it back in a refund later? Just don’t take it from us to begin with.

“The plan includes an immediate $250 tax cut for workers and their families.” This seems like a good idea to me, rather than cutting taxes on folks that have a lot of money or corporations, which have tons of money.

“Pledges to withdraw most U.S. troops from Iraq within 16 months, by the end of next year.” Damnit, I want our people home; let other countries figure themselves out–we shouldn’t be babysitting them.

“Would close controversial prison at U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay.” McCain wants this also.
He would revise the Patriot Act.

“Pledges to secure chemical plants and ensure safe, secure disposal of nuclear waste.”

“Proposes eliminating U.S. need for Middle Eastern and Venezuelan oil within 10 years.”

“Proposes to cut greenhouse-gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050.”

“Wants 10 percent of U.S. electricity to come from renewable sources by 2012, and 25 percent by 2025.”

“Wants 1 million plug-in hybrid cars on road by 2015, and tougher fuel efficiency standards.”

“Proposes new $7,000 tax credit for purchasing fuel-efficient vehicles.” Thank you! This is a much better idea than a tax credit for buying an SUV.

Bay says:

obama-biden he is a good leader and he is givein the middle class money

serendipityrose says:

I also believe that Obama's plan for health care and taxes are what the middle class need right now. If I ever make $250,000 a year I will be more than happy to help those behind me who are also struggling to get to that point! Time to trickle down and stop the up trickle that has been going on waaaay too long.

serendipityrose says:

My mama always told me to treat others with respect and not spread false rumors and that those that do spread false rumors do it because they don't want others to find out the truth.

lisadh says:

If you believe the scientists from over 100 countries working on the UN's Climate Change panel aren't political pawns and we should heed their warning, vote Obama because he'll take tougher action on global warming.

Raju says:

You should vote for McCain-Palin because:

Thomas Jefferson says:

Barack Obama wants to unite our beloved country. He wants to give the citizens of the United States of America hope and bring change to the nation as we know it. But what is change? What is hope?

For each thing I have ever done in my entire life, hoping to succeed never allowed me to. Not once did hope ever allow me to overcome the struggles of life and persevere. Hard work - diligence, determination, and dedication - has brought me everything I had, have, and will have. All hope has ever brought me was a missed opportunity. A wise man once said opportunity is often missed because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.

Change is neither a means nor an end. Senator Obama promises change - but change with respect to what? People believe that by supporting Sen. Obama that they support change. This may be true, but when I look at a system of polymers undergoing heat transfers, I need to be able to determine what the changes are to analyze the whole system, not just be able to say that changes are occurring.

Hope and change are brilliant words in politics, but after November 4, 2008, they are words that no longer have the meaning they do now. That is unless for four or eight years Senator Barack Obama sits in the oval office hoping for the nation to begin to undergo change, whatever that change may be.

Nathan says:

I don't like either Obama or McCain. I'm against McCain's energy policy, health-care credit and his views on the Iraq war. I also do not like Obama's utopian socialistic views on making things "fair" for everyone. If Obama will the ability to reach into my 401k whats to stop him from reaching into my savings account which is paying for my college and living? It isn't "fair"(as he puts it) to me for him(Obama) to take money that my dad worked for and passed on to me when he died so that I could provide for myself, and give it to some stupid knocked up teenagers or homeless people in the ghetto.I'm probably going to vote either libertarian, independent or green.

geekahoy says:

If we were to examine the two candidates piece by piece the decision on who to vote for would be clear- and that decision would render in favor of John McCain. Here are all the reason(s) why:

1. Barack Hussein Obama has no experience.

If Barack Hussein Obama applied for the Presidency, the way we look at job applicants, we would have never made it as far as the interview. His process would have stopped at the resume review stage. I don't care how smart any one person is; nothing can take the place of real experience. Experience comes with doing the job under pressure, stress and knowing if you make the 'wrong' decision will impact thousands of lives. This is not the job you leave to someone who has no experience- if it were we would have more CEO's & CFO's right out of college.

2. Barack Hussein Obama is affiliated with racist individuals like Jeremiah Wright and Domestic Terrorists like William Ayers.

Guilty by association has never been a term I was fond of; however, when you are talking about the President and the individuals he and/or she associates himself with. Well, then were not really comparing apples to apples are we? Our Country has worked very hard to overcome the racist divide- and Dr. Martin Luther King said it best judge not a man by the color of his skin but rather by the way he lives his life. Jeremiah Wright had nothing but negative and awful things to say about 'white' American's. And his references to Hillary Clinton were just atrocious. Jeremiah Wright on Sunday mornings preaches racism and hate for white Americans- and this is the man Barack Hussein Obama has looked to as a Spiritual and Religious Leader for 20-years. Not only that but Jeremiah Wright married Barack Hussein and his wife Michelle and baptized their children. If Barack has been a loyal follower of Jeremiah Wright 20-years; how can he honestly and ethical claim ignorance to his beliefs? Barack Hussein Obama sat in church each and every Sunday and listened to him!

And the fact Barack Hussein Obama can look into the eyes of the American people and say William Ayers is just someone that lives in the same neighborhood is beyond me. William Ayers bombed the Pentagon, killed innocent men and women in the process, and has shown no remorse for his actions. Barack Hussein Obama has worked on many 'community projects' with William Ayers and announced his Candidacy for President while in the home of William Ayers. Now Barack Hussein Obama is lying about having any involvement and contact with William Ayers.

I'm not sure if I am more upset about Barack Hussein Obama's poor choice in the company he keeps with Jeremiah Wright, William Ayers... and let’s not forgets the low-life of Fannie Mae who put our Country in this economic state of crisis; or the fact he so willing and unethically lies about it. Either way, the issue boils down to a serious lack of 'trust'.

3. Barack Hussein Obama's and his contributions to the US Financial Crisis:

In just three years in the Senate, Barack Hussein Obama has asked taxpayers for over a hundred earmarks totaling $740 million dollars. John McCain has been in the Senate for twenty-six years. Guess how many earmarks he has asked for? ZERO.

Barack Hussein Obama has promised, repeatedly, that he will cut taxes for 90% of America. But talking out of both sides of his face, Barack Hussein Obama also voted to allow the Bush tax cuts to expire. So that means our income taxes will actually go up.

John McCain tried to blow the whistle on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac over two years ago. In 2006, he told the Senate, “For years, I have been concerned about the regulatory structure that governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac…. The GSEs need to be reformed without delay.” So, it's no wonder he didn’t get their political contributions. And who opposed the reforms John McCain was calling for? None other than Barack Hussein Obama. Guess who received campaign contributions from the people who drove Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae into the ground? Of course, Barack Hussein Obama. John McCain saw this nightmare coming. Barack Hussein Obama has been a major part of the problem.

To help the middle class, Barack Hussein Obama has promised to drastically increase the taxes on the wealthy and big corporations. This is scam to make the American People think that the middle class will be better off. Well, don't be fooled! The reality is when big companies pay more taxes, they cut costs, they cut jobs, and they cut salaries. Which means the middle class will have less money, not more. Barack Hussein Obama is misleading America into thinking his new grand tax plan will help- but in reality it will only hurt the economy and the American People more.

I cannot speak for the rest of the American people but I can speak for myself and there is absolutely no way, no how that I will help support putting an inexperience, disingenuous, unethical, racist provoking man (or woman) into office. I know the American people are hungry for something different, they see the problems we're facing today and are grasping at anything that looks smells and feels different. But the 'change' Barack Hussein Obama wants to bring will only further hurt our Country, economy and adversely impact our lives to the point it will be next to impossible to turn around.

It is in the best interest of the Country, economy and American People to support and Vote for John McCain. John McCain has exceptional experience, leadership and proven track record that Barack Hussein Obama cannot begin to compare too.

John McCain learned that to sustain his self-respect for a lifetime it would be necessary for him to have the honor of serving something greater than his self-interest -- service to his country. John McCain has always put his country's interests before any party, special interest and even his own self-interest. He has always and will always do what is right for our country.

Support and Vote, John McCain for President!

Scott says:

If you believe in the rule of law, the U.S. Constitution, freedom, self-reliance, and personal responsibility, then you should vote McCain/Palin. Obama would ignore the Constitution to an even greater extent than it already is, he believes the government is entitled to more of the fruits of your labor, and he believes you can't and shouldn't be able to take care of your life and properly set your priorities.

I like the IDEA of Obama, he's charismatic and a great speaker. He's intelligent and he knows what's going on in the world - and at home. But, and a BIG but... I don't like the idea of "spreading the wealth" and penalizing success, all so Obama can socialize the country and give handouts to those McDonald's workers who could care less about their job and just want some free money. Hasn't the treasury printed enough?

MK from NYC says:

truthfully..i think obama overabused his $$$..this guy is spending away..i wonder if the arab countries have anything to do with his funding..since of course he refuses to have the democractic party fund him..while mccain accepts the republican party to fund him....<>> pondering..what the heck is going on?? why isnt obama accepting any party funding..when for a century every single candidate did??! ull prob say cuase of honesty and integrity and to keep polotics aside from the democratic party..but i just say another BS excuse..somethin is fishy..and when somethin is fishy sir..u stay away from it!! at least MCCAIN is being honest..willing to reveal all costs and expenditures of his campaign accross the board..now thats honesty! thats integrity!! thats legitimacy..obama\biden they are untrustworthy!!!

MK from NYC says:

THEY ARE WHITE, THEY ARE HONEST, THEY ARE GOOD PEOPLE, THEY HAVE NO MUSLIM TIES TO THEM, THEY ARE CLEAN, THEY ARE JOE THE PLUMBERS, THEY ARE MAVERICKS LIKE MAVERICK IN TOP GUN THE MOVIE, THEY ARE PROFESSIONALS, THEY ARE PRO-ISRAEL, ANTI-TERRORSIM, THEY ARE GOOD PEOPLE WHO CARE FOR THE PEOPLE, WHO WANT TO REACH OUT, WHO WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE, WHO WANT TO REMAKE THE REPUBLICAN PARTY--SINCE THE LAST 8 YRS ITS BEEN GIVEN A BAD NAME..BUT YOU CAN RELY ON MCCAIN TO RESHAPE THE REPUBLICANS REPUTATION! TRUST ME ON THAT!! MCCAIN IS EXPERIENCED..HES BEEN THERE..DONE THAT!! OBAMA-BIDEN ARE INEXPERIENCED..OBAMA HAS NOTHING BEHIND HIM..BIDEN ONLY GOT INTO THE SENATE ON A SYMPATHY NOTE CAUSE HE LOST HIS WIFE IN ACCIDENTS...HE HAD A LOT OF BAD DONE TO HIM GROWING UP..HAD A LOT OF CRAP DONE TO HIM..SO IN RREALITY HES NOT SUPPOSED TO BE A SENATOR..BESIDES EVERY ISSUE HE SIDED ON..HE WAS DEAD WRONG ABOUT IT--WHICH MAKES HIM INEXPERIENCED!!

Michey says:

Raju, How you can say that Obama will improve the economy of United States very brightly? He did nothing to convince me that he gas experience to do it: he never balance a budget, never leead a company or a state or... somthing, except he manage to get a fat loan from his friends to by an expensive house? You see him adopted a kid, No!
Secondly he will support India! Why? You have the wrong coutry he will support, Kenia YES, but not India.
With people like you, talking is so cheap!
I will vote McCain Palin!

OBAMA

If you are heading toward retirement and would like to down-size your home or move into a retirement community, 28% of the money you make from your home will go to taxes. This proposal will adversely affect the elderly who are counting on the income from their homes as part of their retirement income.)

DIVIDEND TAX

MCCAIN
15% (no change)

OBAMA
39.6% - (How will this affect you? If you have any money invested in stock market, IRA, mutual funds, college funds, life insurance, retirement accounts, or anything that pays or reinvests dividends, you will now be paying nearly 40% of the money earn ed on taxes if Obama becomes president. Michey says:

Hello! I want to vote for people who have a record, who have experience, who already proved leadership, who already served this country.

I don’t think that this is the right time in our history to do experiments with ideas which don’t come out from real experience.

Senator McCain is a patriot who served his country, who did sacrifices for his country. His record in congress proves that he is able to work with both parties, he has a huge record as a reformer, sometimes contradicting his own party, and he is a middle republican. Sarah Palin is an 80% approval rate governor, she knows how to balance a budget, fight corruption, stand tall for her believes. How many governors do you know with 80% approval rate? I don’t know other example, do you? She brings 4 important elements: pro-God, pro-Guns, pro-independency-on-Gas, and she definitely is a reformer. She is an outside Washington, outside congress, fresh mind and spirit. Do you know that NBC in the night Sarah appeared on SNL, had the larges audience ever in the last 10 years of broadcasting?

Senator Obama is a eloquent speaker, this is a talent, but he is not speaking from experience, he is inventing polices, his presidency will be an experiment. Joe Biden is a devoted democrat who voted party-line; he is not a reformer by any stretch of imagination, an independent mind or has a record of working with both parties. How Obama-Biden can provide so many needed changes? How Peloci-Reed, 13% approval rate senators, combined with Obama-Biden also 13% approval rate senators, can even imagine solving our problems.

We are at war with terrorists at this moment, how a person who didn’t serve one single day his country, and never proved his patriotism in any shape or form, he is only talking about patriotism, and ridicule McCain resume, will be able to take the right foreign policy decisions. How!

This is why I am voting for McCain-Palin ticket.

Jewelsofawe says:

I am going to come out with my choice and let you see me. I want McCain. I don't agree with Obama's socialist ideas of spreading the wealth or raising taxes. When You raise taxes on $200,000 and above you cause job loss and paycuts for the employees that employer has. McCain is pro choice so Palin's views don't matter on that subject. The main thing for me is the tax reasoning and being against socialism.

Oscart says:

John McCain and Sarah Palin have built their campaign around doing things to increase the productivity and wealth of the United States. They have heeded the words of Abraham Lincoln shown below:

During this political season let's be reminded of these wise words...

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence.
You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.

Abraham Lincoln

Barack Obama and Joseph Biden have done the opposite by not heeding Lincoln's wise words.

Roger says:

While many like Obama we have to be honest. His ties to terroists are real and his role in the housing crash have been covered up with media smear strategies. Our nation is a big responsibility and Obama's lack of experience is like asking some one to fly a plane who never has gotten into the cockpit. McCain-Palin bring wisdom, experience and objective honesty for all, not just a select few.

angustx says:

McCain-Palin

Obama causes me major concern. His past associations are not to be brushed off. We want to believe his rhetoric so much because we all desire change that we don't even pursue his past/really examine his record to any depth.

A gentleman by the name of Blair Warren has pretty much summed up the Obama movement in one concise marketing statement.

"People will do anything for those who encourage their dreams, justify their failures,
allay their fears, confirm their suspicions and help them throw rocks at their
enemies."

Notice that the premise of this does not imply that "those" have ever, are capable of or even intend to do anything other than provide rhetoric that sounds wonderful. Obama supporters have fallen hook, line and sinker for this marketing ploy. As Blair points out - so did the followers of Hitler, Jim Jones and David Karesch.

Did you know that if individuals in our armed forces or federal service require high level security clearances and had any known associations with people such as Ayers, Dohrn or Rezko, they would be denied those clearances? End of story - no second chance. The individuals would be denied these clearances as their associations would have shown lack of judgment on their part and this judgment could constitute a threat to national security.

Yet, we are are ready to turn the keys of the kingdom over to Obama, a man who talks a great game but has shown very little if anything to show that he is worthy of our trust. Until these associations are dealt with, Obama must be considered in the same light as anyone else with his questionable background.

If a man who had business dealings or served in various capacities with known pedophiles announced that he were opening a day care center, would you rush over to sign your children up to attend the center? Probably not. Why? Because if he worked closely with those types of individuals in the past, it basically means that he was not uncomfortable with their actions and that he could tolerate them in future dealings....maybe even in the day care center. It would show a gross lack of judgment on his part. If you would not trust this individual with your children or grandchildren, how could you trust Obama with the keys to our nation.

My uncle a few years back went through 3 years of cancer treatment, he paid nothing. That is peace of mind, no matter what happens to your body it's covered. We have our problems and our system is far from perfect but I can't imagine worrying about medical bills...it's worth it to pay more in taxes to get that kind of peace of mind, trust me.
