Best Australian Cookbooks - excellent gifts for the cook in your life

Cookbooks! So much more personable than a recipe from the internet. And if you're like me, you've probably got a bookcase full of them - cookbooks I mean - though I do have a folder stuffed with printed recipes from the net as well!

Since the great majority of squidoo readers are not Australian, I thought I'd share my favourite cookbooks by Australian chefs. There are some great ones. I've eaten my way across 6 of the 7 continents, and Australia remains my favourite place to eat. The food here is always exciting!

Christine Manfield

Christine Manfield is full of personality and her food is both sculptural and dramatic. And my goodness this book is mind blowing. Christine has cooked in Sydney and London and travelled constantly for 30 years. This book contains her take on the cuisine of France, Italy, Mexico, China, Japan, Luang Prabang, Thailand, Morroco, Istanbul and more. Each section contains an overview of the cuisine, and her very definite opinions on where to stay and what to eat.

Fire: A World of Flavor

Make no mistake - this is a serious cookbook written by a perfectionist. Do not let the velvet cover put you off. It contains recipes you need to start the day before, recipes which use all the bits of an animal, recipes which require cooking at 70 degrees for 7 hours, recipes which require the use of a number of Essentials (caramelised pork belly, cucumber juice, red masala paste, XO sauce etc) which are contained in yet another section in the back of the book. Some recipes are however surprisingly straightforward to prepare, particularly those in the China and Singapore sections and really produce great results.

Bill Granger

Bill's is a great series of Sydney brunch restaurants. He's a nice smiley guy. He has parlayed low tech cooking skills into a great brand. Simple, elegant, summery dishes. Bill's books are the kind of cookbooks to take on holiday to your rented beach house, if you are that lucky. Few ingredients, nice fresh approach, relatively concentration free cooking.

Tetsuya Wakada

This man is a god. An artist. There's not too much else to say. For those unfamiliar with his reputation, Tetsuya comes with a glowing forward by Charlie Trotter that refers to Tetsuya in the same breath as Alain Ducasse, Daniel Boulud, and Thomas Keller, and rightly so.

Neil Perry

Neil's food is fabulous and a bit more straightforward to cook but still covers the gamut of traditional French to Asian to modern now dishes. His writing is clear and enthusiastic and you will find that you cook many many recipes from this book, not just a few.

All of these are in my bookshelf - most of them splattered with ingredients from use. The Stephanie Alexander book is a bible. David Thompson's Thai Food is my most used book of all!
