The Biggest Loser Cookbook: More Than 125 Healthy, Delicious Recipes Adapted from NBC's Hit Show
Last year I weighed 530 pounds. After being inspired by the TV show The Biggest Loser, I have lost 140 pounds so far. I still have about 200 more pounds to go. I KNOW that with recipes and meals like the ones featured in this book, that I will be able to reach my weight loss goals. The thing that I appreciate most about this cookbook is that the recipes are simple and easy to follow. I am a bachelor and am not an experienced cook but this book makes me look like a pro. I have been asked by so many people how I've lost the amount of weight that I have. The answer is simple...eat less (make healthier food choices and portion control), move more (daily exercise) and drink lots of water. The Biggest Loser has shown me how to lose my weight - The Biggest Loser Cookbook is helping to keep me going!! PS The Blueberry Pancakes are out of this world! Yumm!!
The Healthy College Cookbook: Quick. Cheap. Easy.
Putting in 90-100 hour weeks during Graduate school, I needed a basic but comprehensive cookbook where the meals wouldn't take long, the ingredient list wasn't huge, but the meals would still be flavorful. I picked up this little gem. I can't even count how many times I've cooked my favorite recipes out of this book--Vegetarian Lasagna, Balsamic Chicken & Potatoes, the list goes on and on. This cookbook covers every meal item possible and gives you a great combination of classic and unique recipes that anyone can make. You don't have to be a BAD cook to get this book, the authors are sensitive to the fast-paced lifestyle many people have and present this as an alternative to lengthy cooking. And now that I'm out of the Graduate School schedule, guess what -- I'm still making these recipes.
The Everything Vegetarian Cookbook: 300 Healthy Recipes Everyone Will Enjoy (Everything Series)
Even if you never use a single recipe from this book, the amusing commentary blurbs make it worth reading. Jay Weinstein has a great sense of humor which is shown in several little textboxes throughout this cookbook.
By the way, you shouldn't have any problems using recipes from this book. There are many yummy ones to choose from, with clear and easy-to-follow directions, as well as useful information on vegetarianism. I think this is a great book, not just for vegetarians, but for people who have decided to eat healthier by having a few meatless nights, or parents who may be struggiling to find something to cook for their newly vegetarian son or daughter.
Oh, one more plus. This book is NOT filled with exotic expensive items you'll have to raid specialty shops for. You can find most of what you'll need at a regular grocery store.
Also, the author comments that certain vitamins are important for vegetarians, etc., but vitamins are important for everyone! And the vitamins he mentions are only available through vegetarian sources. I detect a little bias and/or lack of knowledge on the part of the author.
That said, this book has some good recipes to offer, with unique combinations. It also has what I would consider uninspired recipes, such as puff pastry dough (which is a storebought item) with marinara, goat's cheese (that is, if you eat dairy products), and thyme or parsley; I also saw many recipes with mayo, either soy or egg based. I guess it's a good mix of fast to prepare recipes and more complex, flavorful, from-scratch ones.

You gotta eat right! These Cookbooks make it everyday easy!
Betty Crocker's Diabetes Cookbook: Everyday Meals, Easy as 1-2-3
At last! This special cookbook puts flavor and choice back on the menu for people with diabetes and their families
Betty Crocker, America's most trusted friend in the kitchen, has teamed up with the International Diabetes Center (IDC)--one of the leading medical centers--to create an indispensable source of easy-to-make recipes and up-to-the-minute food and nutrition information for the growing numbers of people who have diabetes, more than 15 million of them.
Here is the first cookbook to include recipes featuring Carbohydrate Choices--the new, simplified approach to meal planning recommended by the American Diabetes Association. For people who find diet exchanges too hard, too limiting or too much work, this new method is a real breakthrough. Each of the book's 140 recipes shows the number of Carbohydrate Choices per serving, so that planning the rest of the meal is easy. From Old-Time Beef and Vegetable Stew to Creamy Vanilla-Caramel Cheesecake, the recipes are made with everyday ingredients, including sugar. No food groups or ingredients are left out, so there's no need for anyone to feel deprived or restricted to a special diet. Food exchanges are also included, making it easy for those who still count calories.
Betty Crocker's Diabetes Cookbook is also packed with expert medical and nutrition tips from Dr. Richard Bergenstal, an endocrinologist and diabetes doctor, and two registered nurses--invaluable for the newly diagnosed as well as for those who have been coping with diabetes for years. Throughout the book, real-life advice from people who have diabetes offers inspiration and great ideas on dealing with this chronic disease. When it comes to eating and living with diabetes, people need guidance and advice they can trust. Betty Crocker and the International Diabetes Center have teamed up to create this text to present 140 recipes using the most current diabetes guidelines, real-life advice, a simple guide to diabetes care, 7-day menu plan, and carbohydrate choices. Includes nutrition data, a resource guide, and medical glossary.
The Joslin Diabetes Quick and Easy Cookbook: 200 Recipes for 1 to 4 People
If you have diabetes or cook for someone with diabetes, and you have a busy life, this cookbook will solve several problems for you. All 200 recipes follow the low-fat, high-fiber, moderate-protein guidelines, and all can be prepared in 30 minutes or less with familiar ingredients from your pantry or supermarket. These recipes are tasty, providing satisfying, healthy eating for the whole family, not just the person with diabetes--no more separate meals. Imagine a breakfast of Asian Omelet with Crab (like egg foo yong without the fat and salt), Breakfast Burrito (10 minutes to prepare), or Potato Pancakes (baked instead of fried). Lunches include a variety of soups, sandwiches, and salads. Dinners emphasize pasta, seafood, poultry, and lean meats, sometimes with an ethnic flair, such as Mushroom Ravioli, Spicy Halibut Fillets with Pineapple, Sausage and Mushroom Pizza (only 16 percent fat), Shrimp Fajitas, Cajun Grilled Chicken on Yellow Rice and Peas, and Turkey Sloppy Joes. Nutritional breakdown is provided (calories, fat, protein, carbohydrate, dietary fiber, cholesterol, sodium), along with exchange information. Designed to feed one to four people, the book includes savory dishes for all meals, plus exchange lists, answers to medical questions, and two weeks of menus (for both 1,200- and 1,800-calorie daily allowances)
At last, great-tasting healthful food -- in thirty minutes or less! If you have diabetes, then you're careful about your diet. But living with diabetes doesn't have to mean being limited to bland, tasteless foods, nor should you have to spend excessive amounts of time planning and preparing complicated meals. Now the same authors who brought you the award-winning Joslin Diabetes Gourmet Cookbook bring you The Joslin Diabetes Quick and Easy Cookbook, with more than 200 recipes for dishes that can be prepared in thirty minutes or less. Here are recipes for one to four people for every time of day -- from Breakfast Burritos to "Power lunch" dishes to delicious dinner pastas like Mushroom Ravioli with Chunky Tomato Sauce, as well as suggestions for snacks, desserts, and beverages. Nutritional analyses and diabetic exchange information accompany each recipe. You'll also find serving suggestions, advice on what to eat when you're away from home or relying on restaurants, and a section on commonly asked questions about diabetes and nutrition.
Once again, Frances T. Giedt and Bonnie S. Polin, both living with diabetes, have created, in conjunction with the Nutritional Services Staff at the world-famous Joslin Diabetes Center, a delicious array of healthful recipes that will satisfy people with diabetes or anyone in search of quick nutritious meals.

The authors of Diabetes Cookbook for Dummies, diabetes expert Alan Rubin (who also wrote Diabetes for Dummies) and registered dietician Fran Stach, have come up with dishes that will please not just the person with diabetes but the whole family. The diabetes diet is healthy for all of us, and if we can make it taste good, we all benefit.

Recipes include Soy Waffles, Crispy Corn French Toast, Portobello Paté, Carrot Soup with Leek and Blood Orange, Mango Tortilla Salad, Oriental Beef and Noodle Salad, and Spaghetti Squash with Fresh Basil, plus a variety of fish, meat, and poultry entrées. Some of the recipes were created by chef Denise Sharf; others were contributed by gourmet restaurants. Diabetes Cookbook for Dummies is more than a compilation of recipes. The book also gives guidelines for "what, when, and how much" to eat, including tips for visualizing portions (an ounce of meat is the size of a matchbox; an ounce of cheese is the size of a domino; a medium potato is the size of a computer mouse). You'll get shopping and cooking tips and illustrated food-preparation steps to help novice cooks.
These recipes transform the typical diabetic diet from bland and blah to "Mmmmmm!" and "Ahhhhh!" Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food
It has become common knowledge that childhood obesity rates are increasing every year. But the rates continue to rise. And between busy work schedules and the inconvenient truth that kids simply refuse to eat vegetables and other healthy foods, how can average parents ensure their kids are getting the proper nutrition and avoiding bad eating habits?
As a mother of three, Jessica Seinfeld can speak for all parents who struggle to feed their kids right and deal nightly with dinnertime fiascos. As she wages a personal war against sugars, packaged foods, and other nutritional saboteurs, she offers appetizing alternatives for parents who find themselves succumbing to the fastest and easiest (and least healthy) choices available to them. Her modus operandi? Her book is filled with traditional recipes that kids love, except they're stealthily packed with veggies hidden in them so kids don't even know! With the help of a nutritionist and a professional chef, Seinfeld has developed a month's worth of meals for kids of all ages that includes, for example, pureed cauliflower in mac and cheese, and kale in spaghetti and meatballs. She also provides revealing and humorous personal anecdotes, tear-out shopping guides to help parents zoom through the supermarket, and tips on how to deal with the kid that "must have" the latest sugar bomb cereal.
But this book also contains much more than recipes and tips. By solving problems on a practical level for parents, Seinfeld addresses the big picture issues that surround childhood obesity and its long-term (and ruinous) effects on the body. With the help of a prominent nutritionist, her book provides parents with an arsenal of information related to kids' nutrition so parents understand why it's important to throw in a little avocado puree into their quesadillas. She discusses the critical importance of portion size, and the specific elements kids simply must have (as opposed to adults) in order to flourish now and in the future: protein, calcium, vitamins, and Omega 3 and 6 fats.
Jessica Seinfeld's book is practical, easy-to-read, and a godsend for any parent that wants their kids to be healthy for a long time to come.
Mom and Me Cookbook
Are you looking for a way to get your kids into the kitchen, turing out tasty projects? I know I was--and I went through about fifteen "kids" cookbooks at the local bookstore before I stumbled on this little gem. It was the only cookbook (other than The Everything Kid's Cookbooks) that would actually get a child into the kitchen. The projects are appealing on all levels--they are easy to assemble, they are too cute for words, and they have super easy to follow pictoral instructions.
It also has a good balance of entrees to deserts, unlike some of the family cookbooks I've reviewed. And with the desserts--like cookies--it takes one basic recipe and shows you about four different ways to use it--marvelous! It's also pantry friendly--no star fruit or rare ingredients you don't have laying around.
Now if you're looking for a kids cookbook to vary your family's fare, then keep in mind this is a slender picture-book sized volume--you won't find more than 22 projects in the whole book. For a good standard family cookbook, I recommmend Beyond Mac 'n' Cheese by MOPS.
But if you are looking to get your kids (12 and under) into the kitchen to spend some time together having fun at the counter, then don't hesitate to buy this little gem! It is my number one recommendation for children's cookbook, project-wise.
Kitchen for Kids: 100 Amazing Recipes Your Children Can Really Make
Kids love to cook and help in the kitchen. That's why Jennifer Low has created this book of 100 no-knives, no-flame, from-scratch recipes that kids can easily make with the help of a caring adult. Each recipe has been tested by kids aged four and up and each dish is beautifully photographed From Paddy Thai Noodles (an oven backed take on traditional Pad Thai) and One-Potato-Two Bread to Baby Lemon Meringue Pies and Strawberry-Fudge Striped Cake, the author shows how to organize a safe and fun kitchen for kids to learn cooking and to create yummy dishes.
I have to say this really is a lovely book for children (and adults alike). I stumbled upon it by accident at Williams Sonoma and decided it was a perfect cookbook. The reason is because the recipes are for real foods and snacks (and not for cheesy, greasy junk that other kids' cookbooks have). The book is divided up by courses (or sections): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner; Breads and Crackers; Cookies; Cakes; Pies, Pastries and Squares; Candy, Confections and Cool Treats. My favorites: Paddy Thai Noodles and Dumpling Raviolis are delicious, healthy and easy (but just easy enough so that there is still a bit of a challenge and sense of accomplishment for the child). Which brings me to another REALLY EXCELLENT feature of this book - it's a book that's not just geared towards little girls. There's a vague image of a child holding a cupcake on the cover of the book but you can't tell if the child is a boy or a girl. The book is for all children - boys and girls alike - which is a very positive departure from all of the children's cookbooks out there that show little girls cooking in the kitchen with their moms.

Martha Stewart's Baking Handbook
Martha Stewart's Baking Handbook presents the doyenne of the Better Way in tip-top form. Or rather, it offers the work of a dedicated team who, under Stewart's stewardship, has devised over 200 baking recipes for both savory and sweet treats, ranging from the traditional likes of buttermilk biscuits, gingersnaps, blueberry pie, bagels, and chocolate angel food cake, to the more novel pleasures of Sausage and Feta Hand Pies, Cherry Fragipane Gallete, Carrot-Ginger Cupcakes, and even the buttery-sugary to-die-for yeasted pastry called kouign amans. Also present and accounted-for are Stewartian showpieces like Mocha-Pistachio Wedding Cake.
The greatest virtue of the book, apart from the clarity of its recipes, lies in its organization: the chapters, which cover all baking stops, begin with relevant tips, followed by notes on equipment and techniques, all photo-illustrated. These set-ups supply context that maximizes the possibility of pleasurable, goof-free baking. Photo-illustrated how-to's in the formulas further the cause. A quibble is the absence in many of the recipe headnotes of descriptive material about the baked good they introduce--it's important to provide info on techniques and ingredients, as the headnotes do, but baking recipes in particular cry out for descriptions of what, for example, sfogliatelle (an Italian pastry), or lime-glazed cookies are. This said, the book is immensely appealing and will excite as well as instruct a wide range of bakers, from the would-be to the accomplished.

Whether you're searching for an eggnog to sip on Christmas Eve, planning to serve a traditional roast goose for Christmas dinner, or putting together a festive brunch for overnight guests, The Martha Stewart Living Christmas Cookbook offers a comprehensive array of classics and new favorites to choose from. Guiding you are how-to photographs and illustrations, along with sixty-four pages of beautiful color photographs that will inspire even novices to get into the kitchen and start cooking. This collection of recipes-ranging from simple to extravagant-makes an indispensable cookbook, not just for Christmas Day, but for the entire holiday season.
