Cook County is well known for its most famous city, Chicago. 



The county is located in northern Illinois. Cook County population was 5,376,741, in the 2000 Census making it the second largest county by population in the United States (after Los Angeles County, California). 



Cook County has 43% of the entire population in Illinois. If it were an independent state it would rank 21st in the US. Chicago comprises about 54% of the county. It is known for its very large Democratic population.
