Celebrate Cookie Monster's Birthday!

Did you know that Cookie Monster, the Sesame Street muppet character, has an official birthday?

It's true!

Every year on November 2nd, take a little time to celebrate with an American icon, Cookie Monster.

You may be asking what would be a fitting way to honor Cookie Monster on his special day. Well, I have a few ideas that will get you started. Before we party with the big, blue man of the hour, let's get to know a little bit about him.

Who Is Cookie Monster?

Where Cookie Monster got his start

Adorable Cookie Monster CakeCookie Monster was first introduced on the famous muppet show, Sesame Street, in 1969. He did not have his infamous name during his first appearance though; that came later. His first sketch was with Kermit the Frog. Cookie Monster came out while Kermit was taking about the letter 'W' and took a bite out of it. He keeps munching on the 'W' until is dwindles down to an 'I' and then, to Kermit's frustration, he tries to take a bit out of Kermit. It was not long before he introduced his iconic saying "Me eat cookie". America was hooked.

Although Cookie Monster ate almost anything, edible and unedible alike, his favorite food was cookies. His favorite is chocolate chip followed by oatmeal cookies.

Cookie Monster Gets Healthy

In 2005 with the number of cases of childhood obesity steadily growing, Sesame Street decided to make Cookie Monster more health conscious. He changed his motto from "Me eat Cookie" to state that cookies are a part-time snack. Doesn't quite have the same ring to it to me but I commend him on getting more kids aware of their health. To honor this change, below are a few snack ideas that Coookie Monster would be proud to recommend...and eat.

Apples and Peanut Butter
Granola Bars
Carrot Sticks
Raisins
Pretzels
Trail Mix
Yogurt

Keep these foods on hand and when you feel the need for a pit stop at the pantry, you can rest assured that you won't be packing on the pounds in the process.

Decorate party hats or drinking cups

Cookie Monster's mouth pattern

Each child could decorate their own party hat and / or drinking cup. Start with a plain blue party hat or cup and write the child's name on the bottom. Print out a Cookie Monster mouth from the above template for each child. The child (or adult) then cuts out the mouth and glues it and some wiggly eyes on the side of the cup or hat to make a Cookie Monster face.
