Clara's Kitchen: Wisdom, Memories, and Recipes from the Great Depression, The Book

Written by Clara and Christopher Cannucciari

Meet Clara. Clara is a unexpected 94-year old sensation. In her Youtube Depression Era cooking videos she shares her recipes, her words of wisdom and her stories from the years in which she was a young member of a family without much money. She shares lots of advice on making meals for less money and includes recipes for dishes like pasta with peas and eggplant parmesan. It was definitely a simpler time and certainly to me seems like a more difficult time. The book is definitely an interesting read for anyone interested in learning about what people went through during the Depression and for anyone looking for some simple, economical recipes and meal ideas.

Working in the Kitchen is Easier With Good Tools and Good Recipes

My pages don't typically relate well to Depression era cooking. However, I do know that many of the tools our ancestors used in the kitchen were made to last and today, if we want tools that are going to last, we have to invest a bit of time and money in finding good ones. I hope my kitchen tools page will help you in that regard.

My recipe pages are my my best-ever recipes, a lot of them ones that I cook for special occasions. My Best-Ever Sloppy Joes Recipe page is probably the most 'frugal' of my recipes and it is simple, delicious and nutritious. I'll have to consider doing some more economical pages in the future like Clara Cannucciari's Past and Peas, Pasta and Beans, and so on. In any case, I am happy to share some of my favorite recipes with you.

An Apron Was A Very Important Piece of Kitchen Equipment or Kitchen Tool

Because it was much easier to launder a dirty apron than a dirty dress!

My Great Grandmother was a widow during the Great Depression with one daughter to raise. Family stories tell me that she owned the house she lived in and eventually purchased one or two of the neighboring houses and ran them as boarding houses. To augment that income and to help make ends meet, I understand that she also ran a candy kitchen from her home.

By the time I came along the Great Depression was long since over but she taught me one of the tricks she liked and that was to make an apron out of a dress that was no longer useable as a dress. I think that was pretty special and remember that fondly. (Not that I could do it today.) Maybe that is why I have enjoyed reading and writing about aprons so much these last few months.

If you are interested in aprons, I am sure you will enjoy these apron pages. One is a fantastic resource for making an apron; the other an index page which will show you my complete collection of apron pages, which include seasonal aprons like Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas and so much more.
