An Islander Favorite - SPAM cooked in many different ways!

I guess I sort of grew up with SPAM.

My Dad and Mom were school teachers... but before they became school teachers, my Dad manage to survive a stint in the U.S. Navy during World War II. And when he was on the ship and at the various battle locations for what seemed like endless days, my Dad said they sometimes had nothing but SPAM to eat.

However, unlike many sailors and soldiers who couldn't face another can of SPAM after they got out of the service, my Dad had developed a fondness for the stuff.

Later, when Mom and Dad were school teachers, during the summer they would work as U.S. Forest Service Fire Spotters at a remote Fire-Spotting Tower in the deep boonies of Montana... and Mom and Dad had lots of cans of SPAM for their provisions at this remote location. Easy to store, easy to stack, and easy to cook.... these cans of SPAM had it all.

So, when my sister and I arrived on the scene.... my Mom and Dad were pretty good at cooking up SPAM in a wide variety of renditions... all, however, were usually in some form of frying.

This Squidoo lens is dedicated to bringing light to this often maligned food item. Have fun... and while you are at it, cook up a nice batch of SPAM!

Sometimes Spam has to overcome its reputation!

SPAMology ... the Study of SPAM ...

Frying SPAM as part of a breakfast!Although my Mom and Dad would cook up SPAM quite frequently when we lived in Montana and New Mexico--and particularly because we were avid "road-trippers" and summer-time campers (we would drive from Montana and New Mexico all the way to New England--U.S. East Coast--EVERY summer... and stay every night in campgrounds on the way over and back home), it wasn't until we moved to the Pacific Island of Guam that we really saw more possibilities for SPAM.

Like I mentioned before, my Mom's main way of preparing SPAM was to fry it.... most of the time in our home's kitchen, but also frequently over a campfire or campstove during our summer journeys. When we got to Guam, however, we found new ways to prepare SPAM. These new ways included SPAM sushi, SPAM salad, and SPAM noodles. I'll discuss these more throughout this lens.

SPAM by the Bay.... eBay, That Is!

Sometimes you can get some great SPAM stuff on eBay.... Some of it is relative to vittles and good eating... and sometimes it may be more related to getting those strange and disgusting emails. I'm hoping that most of the stuff you find here will be the incredible edible kind and not the computer-related stuff. But if it isn't, you can always click on the eBay logo below and then go there to search directly for the SPAM item you really want to have. (I can hear you smacking your lips now and salivating over that next SPAM meal!) (Be sure to check here frequently, because the offerings here will change daily as they come available on eBay!)

SPAM Sandwiches!

How About a SPAM, Egg, and Cheese Sandwich?

Spam Sandwiches!Sure, you can just cut a chunk of SPAM into thin slices and fry them in the same way you'd fry bacon or ham... and serve the slices on a plate, along with some scrambled eggs and some rice (with a spritz or two or three of Tabasco or other favorite hot sauce).... but you can also make a nice sandwich.

Just fry up some slices of SPAM, and a scrambled egg (or two), and then place these nicely cooked items on a toasted English muffin... with a slice of cheese to finish it up. The result will be something that resembles a McD's "Egg McMuffin" ... but will be a SPAM 'n' Egg 'n' Cheese Muffin! Yum... Very tasty!

SPAM Sushi!

One of which is called SPAM Musubi!

SPAM musubi -- one version of it -- at the Isleton, California, SPAM FestivalIf you have a rice-cooker and some Aji-Mirin Rice Wine Vinegar, you can make the basic rice base for SPAM Sushi. Use a bamboo roller-mat to roll the seaweed "nori" around the prepared rice... but before you do, lay in some thinly sliced cucumber, carrot, and SPAM... then roll the sushi. Then you cut the sushi roll into the familiar sushi pieces. Serve on a Japanese-style plate along with a garnish of wasabi (Japanese style horse-radish) and pickled pink ginger and some soy sauce.
