Cooking With Tiana

Cooking has long been a favorite past time of my children and I. There used to be heated arguments over who would help me in the kitchen. These days my primary helper is my soon to be eight year old daughter Tiana. Join us as we share some of the recipes we are using in our home, tips for having your kids help in the kitchen, and reviews by Tiana and I of the recipes we've been trying out. This should be interesting as my beloved daughter never fails to have something entertaining to say.

My Thoughts on Cooking

type=textI enjoy making rice crispy treats with my Dad. I learned that when you take the pan off the stove the handles are still hot! I also enjoy making Hawaiian Style Burgers. This week I am making Mini Melts.

Kitchen Safety: Washing Your Hands

type=textThis is the most basic thing you need to teach your child when they start to help you cook. Cleanliness is so important to ensure our bonding time doesn't end with everyone getting sick. But drumming it in takes work. Tiana has no issue washing her hands to begin, but needs reminders after using the bathroom, touching her hair, or after handling raw product such as eggs. Keeping an eye on her while we're cooking is all part of the process, but you can do some things to make it more fun and memorable.

Steps to Ensure the Cleanest Hands

  1. Rinse hands first with warm water
  2. Lather your hands up with soap
  3. Scrub for at least 30 seconds (Sing Happy Birthday through Twice)
  4. Make sure to scrub all areas, including the backs of your hands and fingernails.
  5. Rinse the soap off from the wrists to your fingertips.
  6. And for true thoroughness, have your older sister take over! Oh man.

The finished product, Mini Breakfast Pizzas by Tiana. We have a Saturday morning tradition of making a large breakfast to start our day. We've done it for years now, and when we had to forego it a couple weeks ago because we had to eat and run, Jenna said she missed our breakfast feast.

Big Brother Takes Charge in Tiana's Absense

type=textYou'll notice a different face in the pictures below. Well, Tiana was busy opening her birthday presents this week, so Jamie stepped into the kitchen to lend a hand. Two guys in the kitchen might normally be an issue, but we made it work.

Jamie is nine and has a long history of helping me in the kitchen. His previous best work was in kabob assembly. He also makes a mean English Muffin Pizza. Together we helped make Tiana's special day just a little bit sweeter.
