The Cake Pop 'Bakerella' Revolution

Ranked #1,243 in Food & Cooking, #23,903 overall

If you haven't heard of Cake Pops yet I'd be quite surprised.

Want to know the 'it' thing in the baking world this decade... and how to make them? The 'IT' Sweets of the 'now' are definitely cake pops!!

I first stumbled upon cake pops in November 2009 when I wrote this journal entry upon first seeing the stunning Bakerella Blog

I've even gone out recently and actually bought all the ingredients and purchased the Bakerella book myself to have a go! I'm going to make chicken/hen cake pops for my sisters Hen's night! It's going to be fun!

So I thought seeing as though I'm all party obsessed at the moment... I should make a cake pops inspiration page for all those that either don't know about cake pops yet... or for those that have, and are looking for ideas and inspiration.

Cake Pops are great for kids parties too cause it's a quick mouthful of cake and chocolate for the kids without having the really big slice! And making them into characters and all colorful and fun makes the party table look just so spectacular!

Hope you enjoy this little mini journey into cake pop land! :)

Here's Where Cake Pops all STARTED - January 28th, 2008

Here's what Angie first wrote:
I wanted to make cake balls this weekend, and I wanted them to be pink inside, so I tried making a white cake with raspberries. It made the cake pinkish, but it's consistency just wouldn't work, so I decided to stick with the red velvet cake ball recipe and went to the store and bought a chocolate cake mix to substitute. I also used some pink candy melts instead of the chocolate bark. And just to make them even a little cuter, stuck them on lollipop sticks...Cakesicles anyone?

And from this first 'Cakesicles' random creation sprung a 'Cake Pops' revolution!!

My First attempt at pops were marshmallow Pops - they were a huge hit with all the party guests!

So easy to make and delicious too!

How to make the easy alternative to cake pops - Marshmallow pops!!

Here's a Marshmallow Lego Mini Figure Head Pop Idea you might like...

Marshmallow Lego pops

How cool are the lego pop holders in the photo! Sue's obviously used rectangle polystyrene... cut rounded pieces .... then glued them together to look like a lego brick then painted them blue! So creative!!

Making marshmallow candy Lego Mini-Figure pop's are easier than you might expect!

You have two options for making the marshmallow base.

1. Cut a mini marshmallow in half and then attached the cut stickier side face down on a large marshmallow.
or
2. Slice the bottom off a large marshmallow and then cut a smaller circle out of the cut piece (Using a frosting tip to create circle cut outs is an easy option). Then attach the circle with stickier cut side facing down on the top of a large marshmallow.

Lego Marshmallow Pops

Heat your white chocolate and add yellow edible coloring. (to color chocolate you must use a powder or oil based food coloring!... do not use standard food coloring as they are water based). When I melt chocolate I heat about a cup of chocolate in the microwave for no longer than 2 minutes. When I pull it out of the microwave most of the buds are still formed... but that's ok ... I just stir for a while and they all melt and combine together. (you don't want to overheat chocolate as it will ruin). Just heat in small extra bouts of time if required.

Then just attach your lolly pop sticks to the marshmallow bases and dip away.

You can either use black frosting for the faces which you would pipe on with a very fine piping tip, or use edible black pens to draw the face on (edible pens won't show as dark and the lines won't be as thick though - like you see on the example fondant cupcake character below which I created... I had to re-write over the design a few times to get them darker)
