For most of modern style history, shoes have been all about conformity. Boys beg their parents for the high-status basketball shoe everyone's sporting. Girls trudge around in the same shapeless Uggs. Celeb mags run photos of 3 starlets in identical "it" stilettos, asking "Who wore it best?"

Nike ID is a custom shoe line combining style with functionality in a near-endless array of style and color choices. And just about the most fun I've had online. I love running and have customized 2 pair of Nike Free ID running shoes....one gray with neon accents (pink, yellow, etc.), and the latest pair berry colored with bright blue (see top photo). They're super comfy and still draw compliments, even battered now from constant wear. But custom Nikes aren't just for runners; there are options for every sport, or no sport at all. Look hot without breaking a sweat in personalized Nike Dunk, Shox, or Air Max shoes, available in men's and women's sizes.

Dude! Jeff Spicoli would envy the 21st-century Vans shoe shopper, able to convert several styles into custom Vans, from old-school slip-ons to lacing varieties. I'm not sure how the classic b/w checkered pattern can be improved on, but it's fun to try.

Customized Keds provide the most creative freedom in personalized shoe design. Your art or photos (give new meaning to "walk the dog"!) are printed on the canvas before the shoe is assembled, allowing you to wear pretty much anything you want on your feet. I created a pair of Keds with a detail from my son's painting, and the quality is amazing. As a writer/editor, I also appreciate the chance to play around with text (below). As you might expect, custom shoes cost more, both in dollars and (production) time.

Are they worth it?

Yes! I hate looking like everyone else and would pay a bit more for custom shoes.
