Rated G. (Control what you see)

When I was growing up, I wore whatever my parents dressed me in. Garanimals. Hand-me-downs. And, if my school pictures are any indication, some pretty dreadful outfits.

I'm not sure if that's because of my folks' fashions sense -- or nonsense -- or because of the limited options in the '70s, but children don't have to dress like ragamuffins or the colorblind. (Nothing against the colorblind, mind you.)

This lens rounds up some of the more tasteful and innovative children's clothing makers.

Featured Label

One maker to meet soon

I've been exchanging emails with one of the owners of Lil' Punk, so I thought it'd be nice to focus on their wares first.

Heavily inspired by the punk fashion design sensibility of Malcolm McLaren and his crew, this label has manufactured a line of fun -- and funky -- sleeveless, short-sleeve, and even adult-sized (according to one photo online) T-shirts.

But the label goes beyond the stereotypical ripped cloth and safety pin iconography of '78. The shirt designs actually riff off of actual bands, including the Sex Pistols (natch) and the Misfits, offering playful retoolings of band logos and sloganeering.

Daddy's little monster, indeed!

For You and Your Young'uns

Wear you at?

A friend of mine makes it a practice to buy his child a book whenever he buys himself a book. You can do the same with clothes. That's not to say you should wear matching jackets. In fact, please don't. But many clothes makers care about parents as well as their progeny.

Magazines for Mommies and Daddies

Periodicals for parents

The following titles frequently feature fashionable -- and fun -- clothing for children. We read several of them and recommend that you consider signing up for at least one.

Cookie (1-year)

This new magazine is slightly upscale compared to the other magazines and has a more urbane sensibility. It might be right up your alley!

Amazon Price: $15.00 (as of 10/11/2008)

Parents (1-year)

A solid magazine for parents. This one doesn't impress or inspire me as much as the others, however.

Amazon Price: $9.97 (as of 10/11/2008)

Studio Bambini

Given the prohibitive subscription price, this one might be a stretch, but this foreign magazine also features the highest styles.

Amazon Price: $44.37 (as of 10/11/2008)

Have you checked out Urban Baby Runway? www.urbanbabyrunway.com. I found some unique brands there I've never heard of before but they do have a couple you mentioned above. I just found out I'm pregnant so I haven't started buying yet but have bookmarked a bunch of sites!

I also like SavvyTot (http://www.savvytot.com) for baby t's with attitude. It's a family owned small business, which I also like.

Our daughter proudly sports the "Don't Blame Me, I Can't Vote til 2024" onesie in trendy, gender-neutral chocolate brown (hooray -- not pink!)
