Hacking is more than just 0's and 1's
0's and 1's are just binary.
Sure, if you don't know what binary is, it can be a scary word. Not to worry, though: binary just means that something is only one thing, or another. On or off. Black or White. Knit or Purl.
Just like long strings of binary makes up complex computer code, a few simple stitches in crochet make up complex crochet projects. Sure, it helps to learn a few special tricks to get the results you want...
So you experiment, right? That's just what hackers do.
Yarn Hackers is the personal crochet blog of Rachel Keslensky, and when she's not working on her webcomic, she's crocheting.
She posts patterns and conceptual pictures of what she wants to make. She posts pictures. She posts tips and plans for what she wants to do. And it's actually decent stuff - not just sweaters and hats you'd never even consider making for yourself, but cool bags, cute ideas, and nifty solutions!
And even if you don't like what she makes, just go and improve upon her patterns to make your own!
Follow along as she makes all sorts of things she just thought up one day and decided to make. Maybe get a few ideas for good stuff of your own.
Who knows? You just might learn something.
How do you Hack your Yarn?
How "Handy" are you with your yarn?
Yarn Hackers focuses mostly on Rachel's crochet, but every now and then she still thinks knitting looks pretty cool...

Christine says:
I feel like I have to say knitting because it's what I know how to do. But I'm really itching to learn crochet because there are a lot of cool patterns I want to try, and I feel left out.

Sabra says:
Crochet. I can do both. I am trying to improve my knitting skills, but keep bumping up against not having the right kind of needles. I have size 9 needles, but only circular, not DPNs. I have size 5 needles, but only DPNs, not straights or circular. I deeply resent having to buy multiples of the same size tool. This is why crocheting is better: flat, round (of ANY diameter, thankyouverymuch), I-cord, whatever--it all takes the same hook!
(And that's just reason #1!)

I only know how to crochet (so far) but I have to admit I think knit stuff seems to look better to me. I'll have to learn. I have stick envy.

The Top Five Reasons Yarn Hackers is the Coolest Crochet
- No stupid patterns to follow! Fed up of having to decipher crochet code? You're in luck! There's no patterns involved on Yarn Hackers (aside from the general shapes of items), so you're free to cut loose with the pattern as you like!
- All types of yarn get used! Love Lion Brand's Incredible? Or Lily's Sugar and Cream? Maybe you're into some specialty stuff, like Canadian wool... you're in luck, because Rachel believes there's a perfect utility for every yarn! It's just a matter of finding out what...
- Totally awesome philosophy! If you can think it up, You can crochet it! (Yes, we're sure there's a utility for a crochet'd robot somewhere. Or at least a robot with a skin that's been crochet'd together.)
- Pretty pretty pictures! Well, what good is a blog about crochet without a picture of the results? And it's not those staged, fake pictures of smiling children wearing hats they wouldn't be caught dead wearing in real life -- these are items that people actually want to wear and use, because let's face it; life's too short to make ugly crochet.
- Anyone can learn to do this! Don't get frustrated because your work doesn't look like the items in the pattern -- because every pattern is what you make of it! If it's all yours to make, you can always fix it to make it right! Every project is always a chance to learn something new!
