Squidoo is a social network that allows registered members to create both a personal profile about and also create personal and customized web pages about whatever topic they choose. These personalized web pages are called "lenses". By signing up with Squidoo, you gain access to tools for creating lenses using the various modules Squidoo provides in the workshop area of your account. To create the lens, all you have to do is pick the modules you want, arrange them in the order you want on the page and then fill in the content. There are endless possibilities to what can be created.

The rewards for spending the time to create these pages comes when the page gets picked up by search engines and starts to rank for searches relating to the topic of the lens. By creating a lens that relates to the content of your website you can then place links from the lens to your site and drive additional targeted traffic from the Squidoo lens to your site. The links also give a boost to the link popularity of your site.

In the early days of creating lenses, these new pages would rank quickly in Google. Soon spammers caught on to this and started creating link filled lenses that offered very little value to the person searching the web but only served to try to inflate their rankings.
