Scrapbooking for Cool Girls

This ain't your grandma's scrapbook.

If traditional scrapbooking just isn't your thing, take a fresh look at what young, hip, cute paper crafting girls are doing!

Sparkly bling, transparent sheets of flourish-y designs, even bubble wrap and torn pieces of cardboard make their way onto very untraditional scrapbook works of art.

My eyes were opened when a good friend showed me her beautiful pages- not the 'old timey' scrapbook stuff I was expecting at all.

Browse on for incredibly creative ideas and links for current, in style supplies that make this hobby so addictive.

I never thought I'd be a 'scrapbooker'

And I'm still not (yet). But I can feel the lure of patterned paper...

If you've never set foot in a scrapbook store because the cutesy fluffy stuff with bows and puppies just isn't appealing to you, well, take a new look. Crafters aren't putting giant diaper pins and bottles on their babies' scrapbooks any more. The hobby has become way more sophisticated and artsy than the old paper piecing stuff you might recall.

The new products and galleries available now are sure to get you hooked!

Those pretty papers are found here:

Hambly Screenprints
Hambly makes incredibly cool transparent sheets of hand silk screened designs that can be used in all sorts of crafting.

Not sure where to start?

A list of things you'll need before you get all creative.

This hobby can get pretty expensive if you let it, but here are the basics you'll need to get started:

Pretty paper
Adhesive
Embellishments

and Pictures

Two Peas in a Bucket

A neat place to get the basics... and then some.

I don't quite understand the name, but it sure is cute and catchy.
This site has some amazingly cool projects and even cooler digital and paper products to liven up anyone's scrapbook:

The 'Designer Garden' grows endless ideas for creative memory keeping, organizing ideas, even greeting cards and party themes!

Join Two Peas in a Bucket and start a blog, share your creations, join in the message boards or even take a class. Lots of cool scrapbookers hang out there!

Cool Scrapbooking Books:

A great starting point if you're staring at a blank page....

These books are wonderful sources of inspiration right at your fingertips, especially if you're wanting to make scrapbook pages and not quite sure where to start the creating process. I really like Ali Edwards' Designer's Eye book because she gives the reason behind using the papers she chooses, and every page is full of great ideas. Her photography is inspiring as well.

Scrapbooking kit clubs for cool girls:

Look for galleries with beautiful works of scrapbooking art.

Kit clubs are a great way to get the latest scrapbooking supplies delivered right to your door. The best clubs have kits that are superbly coordinated and give you the option to add on other supplies to expand your kit. Also offered are discussion forums and galleries where members can share ideas and show off their work. Design teams are also a plus for professional looks and seeing exactly what you can accomplish with each kit.
Bad Girls kits
Not only is it a beautiful website, the kits are absolutely gorgeous, with a vintage feel. For extremely cool scrapbooking girls.

Good things come in small packages.

Make a little tiny scrapbook.

Scrapbooks don't necessarily have to be large productions, here are some cute little ones that make wonderful keepsakes.

Your snapshots deserve to be treated this good.

If you were a photo, wouldn't you want to live on pretty paper too?

Look how cool this scrapbook page is - forget the same old square stuff, go round! With detail even on the edges, polkadots, jewels and a great snapshot of a bundled up lil kiddo, this makes a super addition to a series of winter photos.

Try creating albums with 'feature pages'- a scrapbook page with one picture you really love, and then follow that page with the rest of the photos from that event. It makes for an easy way to organize lots of photos while still creating beautiful scrapbook pages.

Random cool tip.

Add a little pop of color to black and white pictures:

I'm no expert with photoshop but I know there is a way to add elements of color to your digital pictures with that program. But like I said, I'm no expert with photoshop and if there was another way to get that look, I'd be all for that!

So anyway, I was looking through my friend's book and saw this adorable picture of her and her daughter, and the dress is colored in pink, along with the heart she made with her hands over her pregnant belly. No photoshop here, she used these great markers to get the job done:
