What is it about skulls that is just so appealing ?
Often symbols of mortality and power, skulls have been used in human ceremony, ritual, and art for tens of thousands of years.
They pop up everywhere- in art, contemporary design, on tshirts, in mythology- and the contemporary skull images that surround us today, in art, in fashion, etc are just so cool!

A Skull a day
Artist, Noah Scalin's mad idea-to make a skull image every day for a year
In 2007, artist Noah Scalin came up with a great skull idea-: he cut a skull out of orange paper and posted it online with the note...." I'm making a skull image every day for a year"
It proved to be rather popular -
Five months later, nearly 250,000 people had visited the site, many sending in skull photos of their own and turning Scalin's blog into one of the world's top sites!
The skull imagery is fantastic- and there is something special in the unique way Noah has created incredibly beautiful, odd, and often humorous pieces: they're made from an astounding variety of materials, from toothpaste to melted candle wax, from tea leaves to plastic straws, and of course, the cabbage skull, and pie skull you see here. One is even carved into a watermelon! (Yes, it was eaten.)

Spot the Dali skull
The film poster featured a Death's Head moth, but not many realised at the time that the skull superimposed on the moth was in fact, the Dali skull, from the Haslman photo.The imagery is very fitting for the story.
Just for fun, here's what a real death's Head moth looks like!
The skull pattern on the moth's thorax has helped these moths earn a negative reputation, such as associations with the supernatural and evil.

I couldnt have a site based on skulls without this beautiful imagery from Sanna Annukka. I absolutely adore her work.
She has designed for some big clients, worldwide, including the band Keane, and her new range of textile designs has just been launched from marimekko.
She is half English, half Finnish, and there is an obvious scandinavian influence in her work, though with a very contemporary feel.
