My Boiled Eggs Were Always Something Of A Disappointment!
Despite following procedure, I frequently messed up, usually overcooking the poor egg until it looked pretty much like the sad experiment in this picture! Yes, they were fine for egg & mayo sandwiches but they didn't really successfully scratch that breakfast itch.

So Duh! Why Didn't I Use A Timer?
I never claimed to be the sharpest egg topper in the kitchen drawer
Ah yes, a timer - that's logical! If I cooked the egg for the right amount of time, I should - in theory - get a perfect boiled egg.First up, I have to admit, that I didn't even look at the digital timers - it's a personal thing. I've eliminated digital clocks from my life wherever possible and they're certainly not allowed in the kitchen.I think it's some kind of post-traumatic stress disorder from seeing too many movies in which the macho-but-kind hero and the gutsy-and-more-than-attractive heroine defuse the nuclear bomb and stop the murderous countdown with just micro-seconds to go.
I thought the novelty timers were cute, especially the chicken but I went for the hourglass timer - primarily because it was free! My mother had bought one on a Sound Of Music tour to Austria, had used it as an ornament. for over 25 years and didn't mind "lending" it to one of her kids!
Happy days!
Well, not quite. The hourglass timer worked pretty well - it certainly got me 90% happy with my boiled eggs but I was convinced that I could get even closer to Boiled Egg Nirvana!

Hearing about my "quest", my housewife cousin took pity on me and GAVE me a Norpro Egg Rite Timer. Wow, it is EXACTLY what I was looking for - she says that it's even kids-safe.
First things first! The Norpro is a steal - it's under $5 - so she didn't have to break the bank - but that's not the point, it works like a dream! A perfect boiled egg, every time - and I am really grateful.
The Norpro's Nuts & Bolts
a very cool timer
- place the Norpro upright in a pan of water with your eggs
- turn on the heat
- as the water temperature increases, the Egg Rite's base changes color, indicating how well your eggs are cooked
- when it's cooked to your specifications (there'll be some trial and error as you calibrate the color of precisely how you like your eggs done), take the eggs off the heat and drain
- serve with buttered toast
- and if you're feeling decadent, maybe some caviar sprinkled on top
