How it should occur to anybody to chase a eight-pound wheel of cheese down the rough terrain of a nearly vertical hill is anyone's guess. For the participants of the annual Cooper's Hill Cheese Roll in Gloucestershire England, the notion seems perfectly reasonable.

2008 Cooper's Hill Cheese Roll

For at least 200 years people have flocked to Cooper's Hill, as both participants and onlookers, for the annual rolling of the cheese. Remarkably, history is pretty unclear about how this curious tradition began. Some speculate that early Roman inhabitants may have begun the original ceremonies that eventually evolved into the modern day cheese roll, but that is a topic of debate. However the ceremony came about, one thing is for certain - people love a rolling wheel of cheese!

Chase the Cheese

Every May Gloucestershire receives nearly 4000 people from around the globe to celebrate the event. Excited spectators line the sides of the Cooper's Hill waiting for dozens of racers to dash forward, tumbling and bouncing down the steep incline. This event always results in many injuries and medics are on site to tend to the numerous cuts and broken bones that inevitably occur each year.

In spite of the risk to life and limb the event remains a popular visitor attraction and a treasured local tradition, and you might have guessed by now what the fearless winner is awarded - the dented wheel of cheese of course!

Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling 2008 video from http://www.soglos.com. Death-defying clips from the 2008 Cooper's Hill Cheese Rolling and Wake, where every year fearless competitors from around the world tumble down an almost vertical hill in Gloucester, UK, chasing an 8lb Double Gloucester Cheese. It can never really be caught as it reaches breakneck speeds but the first person to cross the line at the bottom of the hill wins the coveted cheese. Thousands of spectators turned up to watch again this year, and there were also a few of the usual injuries. Thankfully St John's Ambulances were on hand to whisk the casualties away to the local hospital. See http://www.soglos.com to find out more.
