OMG! Onigiri Cooties!

There are days when you want to surprise your kids with something special in their lunchbox. Whether it's the first day of school, a birthday or someone justs needs a little cheering up, a themed bento box meal can be a fun way to say I love you.

Bento boxes are Japanese style lunchboxes that are packed with nutritious foods, but they are best known for the thoughtful and artful way they are made by moms for their kids. They are more than a lunch. They are a connection between mother and child while they are apart from each other.

What could be more thoughtful than "catching" a cootie, storing safely away until lunchtime and then passing it along to your child. The imaginary germ is sure to stick with them throughout the day and maybe they'll even happily pass it along to some their friends.

I'll show you how to make cute little onigiri rice ball cooties for your own bento box, plus I've shared my free printable page so you can make matching cootie themed food picks and cootie catcher to personalize with a note to your child.

Green Cootie Rice Recipe

Yummy flavored, green rice mixture for onigiri balls.

Green Cootie Rice is the perfect mixture for bento beginners to learn how to make onigiri balls because the tasty combination of ingredients are sticky and easy to mold. The fresh lime and cilantro give it a unique flavor that tastes delicious, served warm or cold. The spinach leaves add a brighter color than the cilantro would alone, not to mention the extra nutrition that gets packed in.

This is a great recipe to make in advance and store in the refrigerator. Just reheat the amount of rice you need to make your cooties balls when you're ready!

Ingredients

4 cups cooked long grain rice

1/2 cup fresh cilantro
1/4 cup fresh spinach leaves
1 tablespoon green onions
2 1/2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil
2-3 tablespoons water
1 garlic clove

Instructions

  • Put the cilantro, spinach, oil, lime juice, water and garlic in a blender or food processor.
  • Blend until it is smooth and the garlic clove is chopped. Don't over blend because the tiny bits of chopped leaves add pretty speckles to your rice.
  • Stir into the warm precooked rice.
  • Follow the directions below to make your cootie balls or store in the refrigerator to use later.

How To Make Cootie Rice Balls

Ingredients

Warm Green Cootie Rice (recipe above)

cream cheese for eyes
nori (dried seaweed) or black olives for eyeballs

1/3 cup any combination of the following ingredients for garnish:
furikake
chopped parsley
clover or broccoli sprouts
toasted sesame seeds

Cootie Tip

You can make your cooties in advance and store them in the refrigerator overnight. Just don't be surprised if they multiply by morning. Germs get bored in petri dishes and have nothing better to do. :)

Instructions For Cootie Eyes

  • Use the palm of your hands to roll and mold the cream cheese into pea-size balls for the eyes. It helps if your hands are cold.
  • Put the cream cheese eye balls into a container and place in the freezer to harden.
  • Use a circle shaped paper punch to cut the eyeballs out of nori or use the small end of a #10 cake decorating tip (or a drinking straw) to cut the eyeballs out of black olives.
  • Remove the cream cheese eyes from the freezer.
  • Place a nori or olive eyeball on the center of each cream cheese eye. Refrigerate.

Instructions For Cootie Balls

  • Use an onigiri mold or your hands to shape the onigiri cootie balls while the rice is still warm. Optional: You can reheat the rice mixture if it cools or if it has been stored in the refrigerator. Uh oh! Don't know what the heck you're doing? Learn how.
  • Put in the refrigerator and chill for about an hour or until firm.
  • Roll the cootie balls in whatever garnish you choose, press a little if needed to make it stick.
  • Place two eyes on each cootie rice ball.

My Cootie Catcher Bento Box Ingredients

It's packed full of fun little finger foods that kids adore.

The green cooties were made with the recipe at the top of this page. They were garnished with clover sprouts and chopped curled parsley. The eyes were made with cream cheese and punched nori circles. The cooties are nestled on top of a layer of edamame.

I made the cutest little miniature carrots with green tops for dipping! It's really easy to make them out of baby carrots and sprigs of curled parsley. Use a toothpick to make a hole in the top of each carrot and stick the parsley stem inside. (see thumbnail photos above) It looks like you just picked them fresh from an itsy bitsy bento garden!

There are also some strawberries, yellow bell pepper flowers, a brown toadstool mushroom, broccoli, more edamame skewered on tiny bento food picks and some veggie dip inside a hollowed out mini bell pepper.

Fun Tip

Mini bell peppers make adorable dip containers!

Cut the top off and remove the seeds. Fill with dip and replace the cap. :)
