Effective Headline Writing - 06/07/09

Your come across a headline: "The Shocking Secrets Of Top Copy Writers Have Been Leaked ... And Can Make You Millions!" and you think, "These Secrets Can Make Me Millions?! WOW! Tell Me More!"

We have all seen headlines like this before. If you are like me, when I first began learning about copy writing, I thought "how could this possibly work?" and "Isn't This too Cheezy?". As I learned more and more I witnessed the power of effective headlines and sales copy and realized the purpose of this format, tone, and phrasing.

There are other very important elements to crafting headlines as well but the #1 most important element of any effective sales copy is your target market. NEVER forget this. If you cannot relate to your target market, your copy will not perform well. Here are some things you can ask yourself in an effort to better understand your target market:

1. Who is my average customer? this can be demographics information. Income bracket, sex, age, geographic location etc.

2. Who do they want to be and what do they want? Everyone has goals and your product or service probably helps them get one step closer to it. You need to relate to the readers ambitions in your sales copy.

3. What are they scared of? This can be very effective. You may be selling debt relief services and could use a headline like "Experts Show You How To Stop the Collections Calls...And End The Stress Today!".

Now that you understand your target market you begin to craft headlines and body copy that appeal to your reader on a core level, not just a surface level.

Lazy Copywriters Tip # 1

Another way to craft devastatingly effective sales copy is to analyze your competitors sales copy. NEVER PLAGIARIZE THEIR SALES COPY. Analyzing is Okay, plagiarism can lead to lawsuits or worse. On of the best places to look at effective copy is clickbank. You can see what the top selling product is by category and chances are...they have professionally written copy (or close to it). Either way, they are making money and converting leads to sales. By reading their copy you may also gain insight into the mind of your target market. Think about it..They have already done the research, gotten feedback from clients and split tested multiple pages to get it where it is now. why not use their research to help yourself? Once again, i am not telling your to plagiarize, I'm telling you to just analyze. Read all of their headlines, look at the format, look at the tone, look at the type of type of motivation they are using (towards or away) and learn from it.

Lazy Copywriters Tip # 2

If you have a physical business, you can do the same thing with your competitors direct mail pieces and other advertisements. The same rules apply but remember analyze never plagiarize!

So by now you should have a better understanding than most about what it takes to craft effective copy. Another important thing to remember is to keep educating yourself. There are tons of blogs and programs out there to hone your copy writing skills to an art. The best thing is that a lot of these programs are easily accessible online.
