Growing Coral

Ranked #6,521 in Education, #151,279 overall

The worlds coral reefs are diminishing very quickly This is mostly caused by us people: overfishing, water pollution, recreation just to name a few. On top of that a lot of life is taken from the reefs to be displayed in our home aquariums. If you have a reef aquarium you can easily contribute to saving the coral reefs by propagating your own corals and even make a few bucks doing so!

Set up your own coral propagation tank

If you have a reef aquarium you already know that this is an expensive hobby. Why not propagate some corals and make a few bucks with it to pay for your hobby?
Theres not a lot of equipment you'll need to get started. You can even start trying it out without buying any extra equipment! The basics are very simple: cut a piece of an existing coral collony and glue it to a piece of rock. The glued piece can now grow and heal and after a little while it can be sold.
If you really want to make a nice bit of money with this it takes a little more work though. To grow corals for profit you need to set up extra tanks (propagation tanks) ofcourse they will need lighting, heating and filtering (depending on your location they will also need cooling in the summer)
No matter how big or small of an operation you want to make this: every coral you grow and sell is one saved from the reef!

Aquarium Search by Google

Google has an interesting new program: Google Co-op. With Co-op you can tell the search engine which websites to search. I have created a search engine that will only search aquarium related websites. So if you are looking for anything aquarium related, from now on you can use the Searching Something Fishy search engine!
