Choosing The Right Cordless Lawn Mower

A cordless lawn mower seems to offer the best of both worlds - the freedom and maneuverability of a gas-powered mower and the convenience and economy of an electric model. There are a few things to consider when buying a cordless mower, however. Let's look at what you need to know.

First, what kind of battery does the mower use? There are several types of rechargeable batteries, and some have longer lifespans than others. NiCad (nickel cadmium) is the oldest and cheapest type of battery, but it's also the least effective type. NiCad batteries will develop a "memory" that affects their charge over time, and eventually they'll hold little or no charge.

NiMH (nickel metal hydride) or Li-Ion (lithium ion) batteries are both more effective, and do not have the same problem with battery memory. They will last much longer, and do not have to be completely discharged before you charge them up again.

The second thing to consider about cordless mowers is how much space you have to cut. No matter which battery type is in the mower, they have a limited charge time. If you have a large yard, or you have longer grass to cut, you may not get long enough from a single charge to cut the whole area. You can solve this by buying a second battery, but that may not be the best solution.

The third thing you should consider when buying a cordless mower is service and support. Because they tend to be sealed units, the average lawn mower repair shop may not be able to service them for you the way they could with a gas mower or standard electric model.

You'll want to ensure that you have a local service center that can take care of any problems you might have with the mower. If you buy it locally, this probably won't be a problem since the place you buy it should handle any service issues, but if you buy it online or from somewhere that isn't close to home, this is something you should definitely check before you make your decision.

Cordless mowers offer a lot of advantages, but they're not always the right choice. These three tips will help you decide whether or not they're right for your needs.
