Developing Core Stability

In order to develop core stability, you want to focus on core stability exercises in your workout.

Core stability exercises are exercises in which there is little to no movement in the spine. Examples of core stabilization exercises are the plank, bridges, side planks, and alternating opposite arm and leg raises.

Developing Core Strength 

Core Strength Exercises

In order to develop core strength, you want to choose exercises in which your spine moves through a large range of motion in a controlled fashion.

Examples of core strength exercises are crunches on a ball, sit ups, back extensions on a machine, and cable exercises like standing rotations.

Core Power Exercises

In order to develop power in your core muscles, you must do exercises that challenge your core muscles to move with speed.

A few years back, I worked for Reebok International as a Master Trainer and I was introduced to the Reebok Core Board.

In my opinion, it's one of the best pieces of core exercise equipment you can use to strengthen your msucles and improve your coordination.

What sets it apart from other ab machines is its ability to rotate and work in the transverse plane.

Many bulky ab machines only work your core muscles moving front to back. This is limiting, and does not adequately prepare you for functional and athletic activities.

Every day life movements happen in many directions, not just front to back.

The Drawing-in Maneuver

The drawing in maneuver may be the most important core stabilization exercise.

The drawing-in maneuver is simply pulling your belly button towards your spine to brace the lower back.

Researchers know that people with a history of lower back pain have difficulty engaging the deep core muscles that help to stabilize the lower back.

The drawing-in maneuver helps to wake up the deep core muscles so that they work more efficiently to protect the lower back from injury.
