Corey Red - Spittin' Life With That New Blue Yankee On
Where is the state of New York hip hop? Where is that sound that ruled '88 and '94? Where is that boom bap record that hot 97 and every other radio station is sleeping on? I recently heard Rakim on a radio interview and he was asked about the state of hip hop today and he responded by saying the New York emcees let that crown get away. The state that created this genre that we all have come to love are being looked upon as has-beens. How come New York doesn't get that respect anymore? Has the south taken over that much? Has Soljah Boy type songs changed the game so much that people disregard the art of true emceeing?
I ask these question because it all boils down to who can bring New York back? In my opinion that crown is wide open for the taking. And it's not about any one person getting the title. Even with Jay, 50 and Nas being the moguls that they are, it's still not enough to say New York is back. It's about a new movement to get the world's attention and to make a statement that NY ain't dead yet. This new movement will consist of emcees that people may have slept on before. Just like in '94 you had Black Moon, Nas, Biggie, the Wu and Mobb Deep holdin' it down, I think in 2009 you can have artists like Q The Prophet, Richie Righteous, Lavoisier, Todd Bangs, Mahogany Jones and the super lyrical Corey Red bring back that glory that ruled the sound of music in the mid 90's.
Rakim stated that New York needs to get back to that raw, gutter sound and not follow the trends of what's being played on the radio. I think the person that can breakthrough in that sense is none other than Corey Red. He's gutter but he also carries the love of Christ. Red is the type of emcee , if given the proper promotion and push, is the one who could fill the void of the raw east coast sound Rakim and the rest of the east coast fans have been waiting for. Now by himself he can hold it down but when he was with his man, Precise, they were bananas. But I'm not even going to get into how mad I am about that split. If EMPD can get back together then I have faith that we'll be blessed with another Corey Red & Precise album. Corey still continues to drop bangers like "Fallin", "Black Pearlz" and "Girl You Know" which can all be heard on his myspace page.
I hate to put this burden on one particular emcee but somebody has to do it. To me it's history repeating itself because when Death Row had the industry in a headlock with all the bangers they were droppin', this new record label named Bad Boy put out this unknown rapper named Notorious B.I.G. and almost overnight people went from wearing Khakis and Chuck Taylors to sportin' bubble coats and Timberlands. Now that's a movement.
