Fire enveloped the thick darkness, saturating the air with its heat. No doors. No windows. No walls. No escape. No hope existed within the inferno. Moans and cries of agony of the prisoners fell flat against the billowing walls of fire. It was a prison,a prison that permitted no one to return to their former life. Would they have wanted to if they could? Would they have wanted to return to their lives of crime, hatred, jealousy, betrayal, self-absorption, and addiction? A life away from God? Now they knew what hell was really like. Far beyond what anyone could have dreamed up. Now the prisoners were lost souls, dead to God. If only, if only.

Fallen angels taunted and mocked the prisoners with arrogance and condemnation. They poked and jabbed at them, torturing relentlessly. A painful memory here. A mournful moment there. No trace of mercy from the demons - they had none to give.

Through the blistering fires of hell could be seen a repugnant figure, grinning at all he saw. Lucifer himself was observing his domain with great pride. His yellow eyes glowed with excitement as he watched his minions torture the lost souls.

Sitting down on his stone-grey throne, he gleefully considered this. The demons did all the dirty work, and he, naturally, took all the credit. The devil made them do it after all. A perfect set up if you asked him. Why should he have to do all the work when he has to "supervise"? All he had to do was sit back and designate which one of his little helpers would go off and torture whom.

Satan placed his knotty elbows on the armrests of his throne. He tented fingers in front of him thoughtfully, revealing his long, gnarled fingers and black fingernails. He was very pleased with how smoothly his kingdom was running. He allowed a smile.

Without his thoughts being interrupted, Satan noticed a loud agonizing shriek off in the distance. The devil didn't flinch. The lost souls of hell looked upward in dismay. They knew that shriek all to well. So did Satan. They had heard it many times before.

The shriek became louder and then abruptly stopped. There before Satan stood a young man's soul. He looked no older than 23 or so and he was clearly terrified of what was unfolding. He couldn't speak. He was trembling with fear. He knew where he was and knew he couldn't escape.
