Correcting Aggressive Dogs by Using Their Own Instincts

Having had very kind natured dogs all my life, it came as a shock to me to find out that dogs are by instinct actually pretty aggressive creatures. That thought never crossed my mind, seeing my own happily living around the house and sharing our space in harmony.

That belief changed though when I took in a dog a couple of years ago that was about to be put down by his owners because he apparently had been aggressive towards them and so I decided to dig in to the nature of dogs and started learning about correcting aggressive dogs

Understand Their Nature When Correcting Aggressive Dogs

When correcting aggressive dogs I found that in nature it was their way to hunt and find food, defend themselves against other animals and basically they used the aggression to survive. And even though over the centuries selective breeding is applied especially to try and eliminate this character trait, you still need to be aware that dogs are very well capable to inflict serious damage.

Just by looking at the way their teeth are shaped you can see that Mother Nature's power is hard to go against.

The easiest way of overcoming aggressive dog behavior is of course trying to avoid it from coming to the surface. Knowing how to correctly train a puppy is of great importance seeing that there are a lot of things we can do to avoid this behavior becoming a serious problem. Learning to recognize the subtle beginnings of aggressive behavior can save you a lot of trouble later on down the line.

If stopping aggressive dog behavior when it first started becoming noticeable wasn't done and your dog is now showing serious aggression, there are still things we can do to counter this undesired dog behavior.

Correcting Aggresive Dogs - Aggression Towards Strangers

If you have never made an effort to get your dogs accustomed to strangers earlier on in his life, chances are that he will become weary around people he has never seen before. As a dog owner you should make sure that your dog gets to see the world and be prepared for it.

Taking walks and having him coming in contact with all types of people (men, women, kids, babies etc) and in all different situations (small and larger crowds, at the vet's, on the street, puppy training classes, etc) you are actively encouraging to grow his self confidence and learn there is nothing to be afraid of.

Starting off doing these things will give you the opportunity to learn about your dog in a calm and relaxed situation without pressure and you can make it a fun exercise.

Ferocious Aggressive Dog

A common situation that can turn your sweet natured dog on to showing aggressive dog behavior is when he doesn't want to give up something perceived as his own. This overly- possessive behavior is innate to dogs. You might experience the signs whenever you try to take away his favorite toy or bowl of food.

This problem can be traced back to dominance. Dogs in nature live in packs, a very structured living situation. By taking away something or wanting to do so, you are outranking him and if the boundaries of your relationship aren't laid out very clearly, your dog might resort to defending what is his.

The Keys to Correcting Dog Behavior

As seen already, some aggression can stem from not being used to certain situations. The one thing you can do about that is to accustom your dog slowly to all new situations without pressure before going back to the specific situation the aggressive dog behavior is showing.

Most other types of aggressive behavior stem for dominance and the pack structure based on ranking. Aggression and dominance are the rights of higher ranked animals so when your dog is showing aggression towards you, he is actually letting you know that you are ranking lower than him. The only way you can turn this around is to start doing obedience training and quite a bit of it to ensure you are taking over the top rank in the pack again.

For obedience training to be fully effective it is advisable to learn about the nature of your dog, so that you will become more aware about the subtleties of communication and body language.

Aggressive dog behavior is a serious problem that needs to be dealt with. If you are not confident enough to bring training to a good end you should consider paying for the help of a qualified dog-trainer. On the other hand, if the aggression only shows in specific situations you can learn a lot about effective dog training on your own.

Either way, you will have to learn more about dog behavior so that you are able to nip future problems in the butt as soon as your dog start showing some tell tale signs.
