Holocaust, Ravensbruck, Corrie & Christ

When I was in college in the early 1970's, I had the privilege of going with a group of friends to hear Corrie ten Boom speak.

Corrie ten Boom is well known for surviving the notorious Ravensbruck Concentration Camp, while her sister, Betsie, who was with her in the Camp did not.  Many came to understand what a relationship with God through Jesus Christ was through Corrie and Betsie.

The movie, "The Hiding Place", tells this story about how the ten Boom family helped the Jews hide and escape to safety during these terrible years, and tells the the complete story of their time in Ravensbruck.  You must see the movie if you have not.  It is a terrible and beautiful story all in one.

One memory I have is of a visual illustration using a glove, it just lay on the podium as she spoke when I saw her.  At the right time, she reminded us that we are just like that glove without the presence of Jesus Christ in our life, empty, it is his Holy Spirit within us that brings real life, direction and purpose...as she is sharing this in her own words, she puts on the glove.  What a wonderful memory, I'm glad I had that experience.

If you click here, you will be taken to a website dedicated to the Corrie Ten Boom museum, and it has a more detailed biography.

Corrie Ten Boom - In a Wikipedia Writer's View

Wikipedia, as most know, is written by whoever would like to share their thoughts about any given person, place, thing, etc., just as we do here, in a sense. I have never added information to Wikipedia, but if I were to share about Corrie Ten Boom, you would know that I share the same faith she did in the power of forgiveness that comes through Jesus Christ...it would show in the way it was written. Here's what Wikipedia has to say.

Cornelia Johanna Arnolda ten Boom, generally known as Corrie ten Boom, (April 15 1892 ? April 15 1983) was a Dutch, Christian Holocaust survivor who helped many Jews escape the Nazis during World War II. Ten Boom co-wrote her autobiography, The Hiding Place, which was later made into a movie of the same name. In December, 1967, Ten Boom was honored as one of the Righteous Among the Nations by the State of Israel.

I am a great admirer of Corrie ten Boom. I have never had the chance to hear her speak, but I have a quote of hers that I keep with me always - "There is not pit so deep that God's love is not deeper still." It amazes me that she could feel that way after her time at Ravensbruck. I wish I had such faith!

I was at the premier of the Hiding place movie, Corrie spoke there and left a lasting impression. Humor and joy, found in the midst of sorrows - a wonderful story.
