The Corrugated Box Industry...Everything You Need To Know

Corrugated boxes are more than just boxes. In the corrugated industry, there are boxes, stand-ups, displays such as: floor displays, counter displays, power wing and pallet displays, just to name a few. Creators of products in companies obviously want to sell their products and be successful at selling products in a huge market with consumer demand.

If you think about corrugated displays as they display products in the aisles of stores or wherever they will catch a customer's eye, then you can see why a display will sell more than if a product was on a shelf. Would you be more inclined to see and buy a product from a beautifully designed and printed display in the middle of an aisle in front of your eyes, as opposed to that product sitting on a shelf lost among other similar products?

I believe the answer is rather clear. It's called impulse buying. What catches your eye would surely be the reason that you buy a product and not necessarily because you went to a store to purchase that particular item.

Every time something is displayed, it has huge advantage at being seen and purchased by the consumer. Displays do attract people's eyes if they are created and designed with structure and artwork that gets the point across.

Corrugated Boxes

Boxes And Why They Are Important

Corrugated boxes are bought and sold by the millions worldwide. If you stop and think about it, just about everything is packed and protected in a corrugated box. Boxes are designed and created to fit different products so that they are able to ship to a destination. Corrugated boxes are different from cardboard boxes. Cardboard is actually a different material. For example, the box that a tube of toothpaste may come in is known a s a "cardboard" box. If you were to ship something in a "corrugated" box, there would be a "medium" (flutes) and one inside and one outside "liner", thus the name "corrugated."

When I first got into this business I called everything cardboard as well. I was taught to never say "cardboard" and so I learned it was corrugated from that point on. There are many things that go into making boxes and displays.

Corrugated Displays

Displays and why they are crucial to sales

Pallet displayWhen I started in the corrugated industry back in 1977, I knew nothing about displays or boxes. I started working in the factory and gained some knowledge of how a box and display is made. I was then presented an opportunity to move to the design department and I jumped at the chance to learn how to design.
While it was difficult at first, I did start to catch on and within time I became a top notch display designer. I then left my position after 12 years and started my own freelance design business. I have created and designed many displays for products and for many companies for over twenty years. This was all done by hand.
It was in 1988 when I started my freelance business that CAD design computer tables were arriving on the scene. To design by computer over by hand is totally different and intriguing, not to mention fascinating from a designer's viewpoint.
I now create and design everything on the CAD system with each prototype done professionally and with computer files created to create dies.

Corrugated Packaging

Packaging The Product

Assorted PackagingThere are so many products in the marketplace today. If you browse the aisles of stores and supermarkets, the products that you see there are for the most part in very good condition because they were most likely packaged with corrugated board. There are breakable products that require extra packaging to ensure that they arrive safely to their destination so that the consumer gets what they paid for when they purchase and open their product.
Corrugated paper comes in a variety of "flutes" (squiggly curved paper in the middle) and two outside "liners" that are flat.
There are thinner flutes such as: E and F flutes. There is a "B" flute that most displays are made of. There is also a "C" flute and a "BC" flute which has two flutings and three liners for double strength.
Corrugated paper comes in a variety of tests (ECT: Edge Crush Test) ECT 32, 44, and 48
The bottom line when it comes to the packaging in corrugated of products: protection that is also cost effective.

Specialty Items

Deer HeadWhile I love what I do when it comes to designing, I especially enjoy creating and designing something that is special and phenomenal. I have designed many different things that are unique in the corrugated field. Design requires visualization and my theory is that if I can visualize something in 3D, then I can create it flat on a computer screen.
Have you ever gone into a movie theater? I'm sure that most people have. When I go to a movie theater, I am always fascinated by the very large and detailed displays that are in the lobby. The very unique part to designing on the computer is that it is much less time consuming for the most part to edit the designs created.

Corrugated Boxes For Crafts

There are many people today who love to make and create crafts. Crafts has always been a popular and fascinating field to be in. As I am creative in my field, I admire people who create and design crafts for the craft industry, for their craft business and also for their own personal satisfaction. Whenever I go to a craft fair, flea market and shopping mall, I always pay particular attention to crafts. Another reason I am interested in what is made is that I actually make and create boxes for crafts as well. Whether someone needs a box or carton to ship their handy work or to just display it, I can help them by creating a unique box for their precious items. Crafts and corrugated boxes go hand-in-hand.
