What Goes into the Cost of Liposuction?

Ranked #119,586 in Healthy Living, #1,179,977 overall

Trying to understand exactly what makes a product or service cost what it costs is tricky. When it comes to health insurance and medical services, well, let's just say it's an art onto itself to decipher those bills! I mean, for real, have you ever tried to understand what the bill from the insurance company actually means? Half the time the columns with numbers don't even add up correctly!

In any event, this article is not about dental bills - it's about the cost of liposuction. And since cosmetic surgery is rarely covered by health insurance anyway, this means you, that patient, will be footing the bill entirely. It's worth understanding then what those items on the bill mean and what it means to the overall cost of liposuction.

Cost Influencing Factors

There are multiple factors that influence the price of liposuction. In fact, liposuction prices vary greatly depending on how these factors flesh out. Let's look at them now.

1. The Experience and Reputation of the Cosmetic Surgeon.

Of course this is going to be a big wild card in the cost of surgery. Extremely popular doctors - often those who treat celebrities, for example - are able to charge obscene amounts of cash for their services. This is obviously out of our control. The good news is, most doctors are just every day people, performing work on people just like you and I, and so the prices don't get out of control.

2. The Location of the Office.

An office located in a central area of Beverly Hills or NYC is going to charge more for services than a place outside of the city in Durham, NC. This is just how it works. If you live in a big city, look for places that might be right outside of town or in an area not known for extravagant wealth.

3. The anesthesiologist

Having to have the services of an anesthesiologist can largely effect the cost of liposuction. These medical professionals are responsible for the patient being properly sedated yet never crossing into any risk or danger zones during surgery. This translates into a big fee, which is then passed on to the patient. Note that there might be an additional fees for the sedation substances itself, in addition to the services for dispensing them.

4. Garment Fees.

Patients are often bills for the surgery garments used during and after liposuction.

5. Hospital Operating Room fees.

Not all doctors own the areas they are performing surgery in. If the surgery is done in a hospital, the hospital will be charging the doctor for that usage, which then - you guessed it! - gets added to the patients bill.

6. Misc. Fees

There may be other seemingly random fees that come up, including consultation, post surgery appointments, and so on. These may or may not be included in the bill that comes after the surgery itself. Make sure you know what you're being charged for and when so that when the bills come they make sense.

Liposuction is a surgery many, many people have. It's not cheap, but it's not so expensive that it's not affordable to most middle class citizens. If you're thinking of checking out some prices for liposuction, be sure to know what goes into that cost so you can compare apples to apples, and not apples to oranges.

Best of luck!
