Brief History of Costa Rica

Christopher Columbus making his fourth and last voyage in 1502 made the first European landfall in Costa Rica. Settlement in the region began in 1522.

In 1821 Costa Rica along with other Central American provinces declared independence from Spain. Border disputes broke out and there was an unstable history and environment. During 1838 Costa Rica proclaimed itself a sovereign country.

During 1899 Costa Rica began an age of peaceful democracy and continues today. Only twice were there disruptions. One during 1917-19, when Federicao Tinoco ruled as a dictator and 1948 when Jose Figueres led an uprising during a presidential election that was disputed.
