Where exactly is the Costa Del Sol?

In Spain's southern Andalucian region, the Costa Del Sol holiday region covers the coastal towns along the Mediterranean coastline of Malagá province, and also covering the eastern edge of Cádiz province.

Whilst tourism has brought about considerable development to the area, many small coastal towns and fishing villages remain, providing smaller communities and 'off the beaten track' opportunities for visitors to the region.

The extensive coverage of golf resorts covering the land also provide a picturesque touch to the area, which is known to be one of the more particularly scenic stretches of the Spanish coast.

All about Malaga

Gateway to the Costa Del Sol

Malagá is a port city on the Costa Del Sol: the gateway to the region. There is an international airport just 8kms from the city centre, making it a popular town to kick off a tour of the coast, moving south. Don't make the mistake many do of heading straight to the nearest golf course! This area has some real gems and places of significant historical interest, well worth visiting on your way.

Not many people know that world famous painter Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga. Hailed as one of the first to bring the cubist art movement to life during the peak of this era between 1908 and 1914, Picasso's work was truly ground-breaking for it's time.

In Malaga, you can visit his original home and a fabulous museum which was opened in 2003, dedicated to his work not just on canvas, but also many of his sculptures, ceramic work and drawings, which together help to paint the picture of the man behind the brush strokes which made him famous.

In the historic part of town you will find the Alcazabar Fortress. Built during the 15th Century when the Moorish people ruled the land, this site is an important historic figurehead of this part of Spain's past. You can enjoy spectacular views from the roof, looking over the city and the harbour. Inside there are beautifully decorated gardens and courtyards. To the left of the main entrance to the fortress, you can view the remains of a Roman Theatre, still under restoration.

Also worth a visit is the Gibralfo castle, built between the 8th-14th Century to protect the palace below. The ruins are in very good condition. You can visit the well, old bakery and gardens within it's walls, as well as enjoy spectacular views of the Malaga region.

The Picasso Museum, Malaga

A trip to the Costa Del Sol, would be incomplete without a visit to the birthplace of Pablo Picasso- the town of Malaga. Here you can view his original home and visit a museum dedicated to his life and artwork. For more information, visit the official website.
