Although the best time weather-wise is December-May, Costa Rica is a year-round destination.

Costa Rica has two seasons - the dry season and the green season (or rainy season). The dry season is from December to March. The dry season is the busiest time in Costa Rica. The green season is from April to November. During the rainy season it generally rains for a few hours and then clears up.

Arenal volcano

Arenal volcano is the most spectacularly active in Costa Rica. The perfect cone is visible from most anywhere in the area, but if you want a good view of an eruption, your best bet is to stay in one of the "observatory" type lodges, and stay up late or get up with the sun. There were hiking tours based out of La Fortuna de Arenal which used to take you up the west ridge to the the crater rim. Because of the number of people killed by ash, falling cinders and toxic fumes, this is no longer allowed. There are still plenty of hiking trails that get you as close as is advisable.

Playa Grande

Costa Rican beaches don't come more beautiful than Playa Grande, a seemingly endless curve of sand (varying from coral-white to gray) with water as blue as the summer sky. A beach trail to the north leads along the cape through dry forest and deposits you at Playa Ventanas, a pristine scalloped swath of white sand, with tide pools for snorkeling and bathing.
The beach sweeps south to the mouth of the Río Matapalo, which forms a 400-hectare mangrove estuary behind the beach. The ecosystem is protected within Tamarindo National Wildlife Refuge and features crocodiles, anteaters, and monkeys. Waterbirds and raptors gather, especially in dry season. The wildlife population is increasing; deer and even ocelots and other cats are seen with greater frequency.

Visiting the Turtles of Playa Grande

Turtles call at Playa Grande year-round. The nesting season for the giant leatherback is Oct.-March, when females come ashore every night at high tide. Sometimes as many as 100 turtles might be seen in a single night.

Palo Verde National Park

Palo Verde National Park has a uniquely dichotomous character. It's simultaneously a spectacular wetlands and one of the best examples of tropical dry forests remaining anywhere in the world. This dual nature is a result of the Río Tempisque flooding over land located in a relatively arid climate region.

It is not just surfing that is on the activities list on Costa Rica's pacific coast. The whole area is a huge aquatic playground; waters teeming with fish and other life mean great scuba diving or great fishing with many local boats taking tourists out on the hunt for tuna, wahoo, marlin and other big game.
