Costume Movies

Ranked #12,908 in Entertainment, #157,637 overall

The best movies, like the best books, take you away to another time or place, and for me, one of the greatest pleasures of movie going has always been the clothes. In real life, I'm a jeans and t-shirts kind of girl, but through film, I can revel in the gorgeous silks, satins, and jewels of bygone times and exotic places.

This lens is not a comprehensive list of every costume movie from every era ever made, but it features my selections of the best (or at least most entertaining - Ancient World, I am looking at you!) films from each era that I know.

The Ancient World on the Big Screen

When I said "best" films from each era, I did mean it, but when we're talking about the Ancient World, "best" doesn't really say much.

The Ancient World on the Small Screen

Much to everyone's surprise, the Ancient World has translated better to the small screen than the big, so far.

Medieval Films

Another relatively mixed category. On the one hand, you get masterpieces like The Lion in Winter. On the other... Tristan and Isolde? ~snickers~

"Valmont" is basically the same story and characters as "Dangerous Liasons" but I much prefer it. Colin Firth and Meg Tilly, and the rest, do a great job. Try it sometime.

One of my favorite old films is "Romeo and Juliet" with Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey. The costumes were gorgeous, music so lovely & haunting. Your lens is most enjoyable and brought back a lot of nice memories. 5*, faved & fanned! :-)
