COSTUMES---Not Just for Halloween Anymore

I love costumes! (Guess I never grew out of playing dress-up when I was a kid.) Costumes are fun, mysterious, and they allow the imagination to soar into far-off places of magic and enchantment.

I went with the grandchildren trick or treating this year, and I was dressed to the hilt in a velvety Queen Elizabeth style costume complete with a crown. I told the kids that I was the "Queen of Halloween." My Little Red Riding Hood granddaughter and my Little Black Spiderman grandson think that I am the greatest grandma ever. Off we went, hand in hand, up and down the street collecting candy and treats and frolicking in our fantasy world of Kings and Queens, Big Bad Wolves, and Super-Heroes in an evening that is destined to become one of our fondest memories.

Ah..but costumes are not just for Halloween anymore. They have become a mainstay for children's dress-up trunks, themed Birthday parties, photo-ops and props, school plays, day-care center activities, festivals, parades, conventions, and even special movie events! My granddaughter wants a Fairy Costume with wings for her Christmas present this year.

With the right costume, one can become a favorite character from a movie, a disney princess, a dancer, a super-heroe, or even Santa Claus in the blink of an eye. For just a few hours dreams can be lived, and harsh reality can be replaced with fun and laughter. The stress of everyday living can be escaped and replaced with imaginative play and entertainment.
