What's more, creating the perfect country cottage home decor is simple and easy to achieve and it does not cost a lot too.
Take a look at some ideas that will help you create the most beautiful and charming country cottage home decor!
Country Cottage Walls
Tackling the larger areas first will set the background for the many changes that are sure to follow suit. If you want cottage style walls then you will see that they are normally done in soft, comforting colors like white, cream, light blue or sage. Very soft pink or yellow works well too and can blend with many different colors. Floral or small print wallpaper in soft colors follows with the theme.
Country Cottage Floors
Tackle the floors next. Cottage style floors are usually simple, informal and imperfect. Area rugs scattered over your light wood floors add color and enhance the look of the floors. Consider some quaint floral area rugs to capture the cottage fee.
Painted wood floors that blend well with walls work well for that cottage "used" look.
Country Cottage Lighting
Light fixtures will go a long way to really creating the perfect country cottage feel to it. Bean pot lamps in different colors are in perfect sync with the informal look of the cottage style. Glass lamps, gold, nickel or painted ceramic also do well. Lamp shades can be easily made by gluing left-over fabric from your throw pillows or curtains over a plain shade. Hanging crystal chandelier pendants from the bottom of your lamp shades will lend a touch of elegance and enhance your country cottage decor without being too glitzy.
Country Cottage Kitchen
Country kitchen cabinets are typically painted white, cream or sage. A smattering of red, dark blue or green can add a touch of vibrant color to your country kitchen. Taking off the doors on the dish cabinets is very popular so you can show off your dishes. Glass inserts add a touch of soft color and are also in line with the cottage look.
Country Cottage Furniture
The great thing about country cottage style is the older and more loved a piece of furniture is, the better it fits in. Furniture usually painted pieces in white, cream or sage colors but any color that blends with your decor will work well. The function of the furniture can change around too. A bench can make a great coffee table or a kitchen table can serve as a desk. Couches and chairs should be puffy with lots of throw pillows.
Country Cottage Window Dressings
Window dressings should be light and airy to follow along with the soft cottage style. Try curtain rods with decorative finals to add a touch of distinction. Cotton floral or stripe curtains that blend with your decor will keep things light. Lace curtains or sheers are also an option. A simple valance works well too and for privacy you can have a pull-down shade that hides during the day. Painted shutters are also a nice option for kitchen or living room windows. They give the room the ultimate cottage look.
Cottage style decorating is one of those difficult styles to define - some interior designers would no doubt say there is no such style in the true sense of the word. But we all know cottage style when we see it... but somehow it defies description; it seems to more of an ambience and a feeling then a set design or color.
And there are variations on the cottage theme such as English country cottage and French country cottage, you may even incorporate 'country decorating' though for me this conjures up slightly different images.
No matter what you call it cottage decorating reflects nostalgia and a yearning for a simpler lifestyle. It is a great decorating style for tying in simple piece of furnishings from different periods.
The important consideration to keep in mind is "less is more" and this is ever so important with this decorating style.
So far on my short journey into the world of home decorating, I have read many books and websites - most unfortunately were rubbish filled with what can only be described as 'fluff'. Thankfully, I did find this great book "The Secrets To Home Decorating Success" which I sincerely recommend you read as it explains clearly how to re-create a cottage home.
By selective use of warm colors in the 'right' spots; careful consideration to lighting; scattering of rugs; floral prints and wall papers; exposed beams (or false ones)... well you get the idea there are heaps of things you can do to create the cottage feel. Read the book and find out for yourself, how to create a cottage style dream.
