What's The TRUE Story Behind The Cottingley Fairies?

In 1917 in Cottingley, Yorkshire, England, a pair of young ladies named Elsie Wright (16) and Frances Griffiths (10) believed that there were fairies in their garden and took photos of them to prove the existance of the fairies to their families. The photos were accepted within the family as proof and were never intended to go any farther than that. However, by 1920, they had left the family circle and become a world story. Some people felt that the photos proved the existence of fairies.

The story faded away in the early 1920s and both girls went on to live normal lives. However, in 1966 a news reporter spoke with Elsie and renewed interest in the story. In the 1980s, the women admitted to using cardboard cutouts taken from a children's picture book, Claude Arthur Shepperson's Princess Mary's Gift Book, to fake the fairies. Francis, who rarely spoke of their ruse because she was ashamed of it, did, however, maintain until her death, that the fifth photo was of a genuine fairy. Both women maintained that they had seen REAL fairies in the garden.

The photos and the camera that took the famous pictures of the fairies.

"I'm often asked what was my favourite Roadshow moment and I think the Cottingley fairies has to be it. It was so unexpected and so exciting, one of those moments that still sends shivers down my spine. During the filming I felt that I might not get through the item, such was its impact on me." ~ Paul Atterbury, Antiques Roadshow Highlights

AMAZON CUSTOMER REVIEW:

"Don't be fooled by thinking this delightful film, Fairy Tale: A True Story, is just for children. I just happened on the movie on TV yesterday and was absolutely captivated and I am middle-aged. I already knew the background story about the Cottingley fairies and was curious as to how this would be dealt with on film. The movie did not disappoint in the least. Although the account is, of course, fictionalized a bit, that fact does not deter from its charm. In fact, I would imagine those unfamiliar with the true events might even more interested -- and even compelled to read even more of the story. Do yourself a favor, watch this movie, I am sure you will be as captivated by this charming story as much as I was. HIGHLY recommended" ~ Maudeen Wachsmith

AMAZON PRODUCT SUMMARY:

"Not as well-known as the earnest family drama FairyTale: A True Story, the English-made Photographing Fairies takes a much more adult angle on the incident. The film follows not the children, but Charles Castle, a young photographer who loses his beloved wife on their honeymoon. A shell of a man through World War I, Castle rediscovers faith when he is convinced the fairy photographs have not been faked. Castle makes a pilgrimage to the site where he discovers--in another vast departure from the other movie--narcotic flowers and erotic fairies that dazzle his sprit. Ben Kingsley costars as the down-to-earth preacher set to make his town right again. This first film by Nick Willing is a rare undiscovered gem, trippy and elegant, that deserved a release in the U.S."

Very interesting lens. I love faeries and when I first read about the Cottingley fairies I thought it was a true story until I saw that the girls confessed. Where can I see the fifth picture that is supposedly genuine according to Frances Griffiths?

This is a fascinating story about the Cottingley fairies. Fairies have been a part of myth and legend for so long, one wonders if there isn't a grain of truth to them.

You've got to read the novel, "Photographing Fairies" by Steve Szilagyi. It's the basis for the movie "Photographing Fairies" starring Ben Kingsley, and it's brilliant! You can find it on Amazon.
