World's Largest Hospitality Network Service

Couchsurfing is a hospitality network service enabling anyone to look for accommodations on a holiday trip through hosts, whom normally are local people. These hosts let guests "couch surf" in whatever spare space they have, may it be on the floor, on a mattress or a couch. These home stays must be consensual between both the host and the guest, and the duration, nature and terms of the guest's stay are worked out in advance.

Couchsurfing Founder

Casey Fenton

Casey FentonOriginally, Fenton found a cheap flight from Boston to Iceland. Rather than stay at a hotel, he randomly e-mailed 1,500 students from the University of Iceland asking if he could stay. He ultimately received more than 50 offers of accommodation. Upon his return to Boston, he conceived The CouchSurf Project in 1999. Click here to read more.

Membership

Few Steps Upon Registration

Couch Surfing HomepageClick here to get to the Couch Surfing website. Membership is free. Sign up and you could directly log in to your account. The first thing you would want to do after registration is to provide very detailed information of yourself, put pictures of you traveling and the sleeping accommodation you offer, if you have any. The more information you provide, or the more reference you get from your guests, you improve your chances of being a trustworthy host or guest. Security is often measured by the networking you build and the reference they left you. If you are looking for accommodations, you can use the search engine on the website to search for hosts according to their age, location, gender and activity level.

You could also an optional card credit verification system, allowing you to become a verified member by locking in your name and address. This can be made by making a credit card payment of $21.07 USD and entering a code that CouchSurfing mails to the billing address. Remember, CouchSurfing is a non-profit organization. They rely solely on donations to meet their expenses. Click here to get verified.

What a cool idea. Much more personal than a hostel and what better way
to immerse yourself in a new culture than actually spending the night in people's homes. Great lens.
