Could David Tennant Return As Doctor Who?

From Eccleston To Tennant.
Before I try to answer the question I've posed I'd just like to say a few things about the Eccleston/Tennant regeneration and my initial thoughts on Mr Tennant.
When I first heard that Christopher Eccleston had quit as the Doctor after just one series I was disappointed. I had enjoyed his performance and thought that he gelled well with Billie Piper. Having had Doctor Who re-establish itself as being a Saturday evening favourite I kind of felt robbed and slightly bereft - IT WASN'T FAIR!
The new Doctor was then announced as David Tennant. Who? Never heard of him. Oh dear, it looked like my love affair with Doctor Who was over almost as soon as it had begun again. Luckily, I was very wrong. I'm not normally easily swayed and am well known for 'not liking change' but I adapted to David Tennant very quickly and Doctor Who continued (but even more so) as an unmissable weekly pleasure. David Tennant made me laugh, smile, grin moronically, get tearful, sad and sometimes made me alternately clap with approval and sob loudly - he was perfect. As they say 'all good things come to an end'. Could, however, this not actually be the end? Could David Tennant be the Doctor again? Would he actually want to? Would the nature of regeneration allow it to happen? Well, dear reader, read on and find out my take on the question. Could David Tennant return as Doctor Who?

What Has David Tennant Himself Said About A Return.
David Tennant has always made it common knowledge that he loved his time as Doctor Who but just felt that if he hadn't left when he did he'd've ended up doing the show forever. Also, he's an actor, and most actors don't get into the business to play just one part. The whole point of being an actor is that you play varied roles in various mediums. In an interview with Total Film Magazine last year (2011) he stated he would be happy to return to Doctor Who for a guest appearance.
He insisted that there are "no plans" for him to appear in Doctor Who "at the moment", but said that he would love to play the Tenth Doctor again.
"People keep telling me that they've read online that I'm coming back - but believe me, if that happens I'll be the first to tell everyone. I'll be shouting about it very loudly,"
Below I have inserted a Youtube video where a member of the audience at the 2009 Comic Con in San Diego asked DT if there were any plans for him to appear in any charity specials etc... He replied with a cheeky expression on his face with ''it's the 50th anniversary in 2013 isn't it?'' ''I don't know''. It was said in such a way though that it could easily be interpreted as a YES. Watch it to see what I mean.

Have Ex Doctors Previously Returned?
Yes. To my knowledge this has happened 4 times in the past (it may have happened more than this but I am only aware of these 4 times.)1. For the 10th anniversary special in 1973 'The Three Doctors' was produced which featured William Hartnell (via video link), Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee.
2. For the 20th anniversary in 1983 'The Five Doctors' was produced which featured Richard Hurndall, as William Hartnell (he had died in 1975), Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker and Peter Davison.
3. For the 1993 Children In Need special Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy all appeared in 'Dimensions in Time'.
4. For the 2007 Children In Need special David Tennant appeared together with Peter Davison (now his real life father-in-law!)
So you see there a precedent - it is possible for ex doctors to make future appearances. At the end of the day it's a sci-fi tv show and they can do whatever they like! :-)

How I Would Like To See It Happen?
Occasionally the Doctor has mentioned to one or other of his assistants adventures that they have been on but which we have never seen. For example the Doctor has said something like ''Rose, remember how we escaped from the Orpids by talking backwards?'' 0r ''Martha, I was more scared than you when we faced that alien thingymybob last week''. So, we know that the Doctor and his assistants go on adventures to places we never see.
Why then, could we not have 'Doctor Who - The Unseen Adventures'? Three special episodes shown as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations, one with Rose, one with Martha and one with Donna. There wouldn't have to be any messing about with time or talk of paradoxes as the episodes would all be set within the three assistants time originally spent with the Doctor.
I think it's an idea with legs - but then again I suppose I would. :-)
What about you dear reader - what are your thoughts?

- I would love to see additional episodes with David Tennant, although I doubt they would make three more. But I could see them bringing him back for a single show the way they did with past doctors. Fingers crossed!!!

- Fingers crossed indeed. I think we all know in our heart of hearts that he will return in some way for the anniversary - I just hope it's not fleeting. I think if they did something like what I suggest I might very well burst into tears! :-)
