Wordpress "Could not create directory" Fix

This frustrating error message shows up frequently after the Wordpress 3.0.3 upgrade and disallows you from auto-updating your plugins. CHMOD edits won't help, nor will most standard practices. Here's how to fix it, though!

About This Wordpress Error

You may be seeing this error frequently after upgrading to Wordpress 3.0.3 or so. Basically, after you've upgraded Wordpress and attempt to auto-upgrade a plugin, you'll see an error that says:

Downloading install package from http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/whatever.zip...

Unpacking the package...

Could not create directory. /public_html

How to Fix It

Once again, this is a simple one. Go into your FTP program, within the area:

"/public_html/wp-content"

...and look for the "upgrade" folder. Delete the entire "upgrade" folder (trust me on this).

Now, you should only have two folders and one file that remain: /plugins, /themes and index.php. Create a new folder called "upgrade". Change its CHMOD permissions to 777.

Now, try the plugin auto-update again. It will work :)

For some reason, the /upgrade folder that remains after this Wordpress update isn't satisfactory to the new version of Wordpress. By deleting it and creating a new one, you're eliminating whatever confuses the new version of Wordpress.
