Counselling, studying and research

I have blogged throughout my counselling studies, which led to twittering and now to this. I have amassed a whole canyon load of interesting links, articles and blogs that relate to counselling and therapy. So I thought why not start a lens and share it with fellow students and those interested.

This is a work in progress, but I thought I would put the feelers out to see how many students/people out there would be interested in a lens like this?

A resource for students

Counselling, Therapy and whatever

Coming to the end of my counselling diploma, but this is by no means the end of my counselling studies. So I thought I would try and create a place for all the things I have found over the past three years, that have helped me along the way. Also I hope this lens will be of interest to everyone, not just those training to be therapist/counsellor.

Barriers to Learning

Procrastination.

I think an important lesson that I have learnt on this continuing journey in counselling studies, is all my own barriers to learning and studying,

I would of easily gotten a degree in procrastination if I ever got round to it, that is....

I will get round to writing more about this.

Procrastination links

Distract yourself even more

Have you looked at why you procrastinate so much when it comes to studying and finishing assignments? It is definitely worth looking into.

Also you need to find a way round it, through it and over it, so I am putting together some links that are meant to HELP and not ENCOURAGE more time wasting :)

Psych Central have provided yet another easy and informative read, it is a great resource for students and non students alike.
Common Problems With Study -Quiz
Organising your studies can be easier if you are aware of your own personal approach and the sort of problems that you meet. Look at the statements in the link, and tick any that you feel apply to you.
Maintaining Your Motivation
From the page: Why are you studying? What do you hope to get out of it? These may seem very basic questions - but they need to be given thought at the start of a course.

Personal Development

It wasn't long into my counselling course before the realisation that 'Personal Development' was going to be a huge part of my learning curve occurred,

So in this section I will providing links to things that inspire and educate you on all things personal development.

My own personal favourite medium has been blogging, so I shall be including a lot of blogs (including my own lol)
A little piece of me
I started blogging at the start of my counselling course, just to keep track of things in a sort of diary format. That unleashed a beast, so to speak and ever since I have loved it.

Self Disclosure

From the link below:

Self-disclosure is not simply providing information to another person. Instead, scholars define self-disclosure as sharing information with others that they would not normally know or discover. Self-disclosure involves risk and vulnerability on the part of the person sharing the information.
Self Disclosure
Self-disclosure is seen as a useful strategy for sharing information with others. By sharing information, we become more intimate with other people and our interpersonal relationship is strengthened. Read about self-disclosure and then complete the interactive activity and take a short quiz to test your understanding of the concept.

Counselling could be described as a professionally intimate activity. This session will explore some of the issues in this area and how counsellors are trained to handle such issues.

Dave Robson qualified as a counsellor in the 90s and undertakes counselling outside of the University. He has been involved with couple counselling with Relate, and is currently counselling within the NHS and also in private practice.

Welcome to Vicky Barber's Art Therapy Home Page!
From the page:

What is Art Therapy?

At some point in their lives, people may find themselves overwhelmed by the intensity of their emotions which are difficult to face either by themselves or with others. Art therapy offers an opportunity to explore these intense or painful thoughts and feelings in a supportive environment. It involves using a wide variety of art materials, for example paints, clay and batik, to create a visual representation of thought and feelings. Art Therapy can be an individual activity but is often used very successfully in group situations.
British Association of Art Therapists or BAAT
The British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT) is the professional organisation for art therapists in the United Kingdom and has its own Code of Ethics of Professional Practice. Comprising of 20 regional groups, a European and an international section, it maintains a comprehensive directory of qualified art therapists and works to promote art therapy in the UK.
Playing in the sand
Abstract: Playing with small objects in a tray of sand is a powerful but simple form of experimentation, which for some time I have been incorporating into my work as a Gestalt therapist. The therapeutic use of the sand tray is not something I have invented - it is used quite widely, especially in work with children, but I believe it is a rich and under-exploited resource for Gestalt therapists working with adults. In this paper I give a brief background to the development of the use of sand play in psychotherapy. I then present my thinking about working in this way from the perspective of Gestalt psychotherapy theory, using some clinical examples to illustrate these ideas.

Key words: Sandplay therapy, experimentation, Margaret Lowenfeld, Dora Kalff, Gestalt therapy, figure and ground.

I post images of my art and write about my life as I work to recover from the past. Dr. C is my therapist. Lloyd and Winston are my cats. Jessieh is one of my closest friends and joy in human form.

The gallery also has drawings in expression of life with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Anxiety, Borderline Personality Disorder, OCD and Dissociative identity disorder. Although the list of disorders seems long these are common symptoms and disorders that develop in the wake of childhood and early adult hood abuse.

Play Therapy

Play Therapy is the systematic use of a theoretical model to establish an interpersonal process wherein play therapists use the therapeutic powers of play to help clients prevent or resolve psychosocial challenges and achieve optimal growth and development. A working definition might be a form of counseling or psychotherapy that therapeutically engages the power of play to communicate with and help people, especially children, to engender optimal integration and individuation.

NLP

Neuro Linguistic Programming

Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as "a model of interpersonal communication chiefly concerned with the relationship between successful patterns of behaviour and the subjective experiences (esp. patterns of thought) underlying them" and "a system of alternative therapy based on this which seeks to educate people in self-awareness and effective communication, and to change their patterns of mental and emotional behaviour".

Cognitive Behavourial Therapy CBT

Having a look at the CBT approach to Therapy:
What is CBT about?
1.CBT is less concerned with insight and more orientated towards client action to produce change.
2.Challenging irrational beliefs.
3.Reframing the issues with facts.
4.Rehearsing the use of different self-statements in role plays.
5.Negative self-statements, in a job interview for example "I will fail" or "Here I go again".
6.What helps? Thinking out loud, thought listing etc.
7.Graded hierarchy of fear eliciting situations.
8.Three types of experience associated with high levels of relapse = Downers, rows and joining the club.

This test is composed of a number of hypothetical situations each depicting the use of a defense. For each situation there are four explanatory statements. Another statement has been designated the least understanding of the situation and defense.
