Would it surprise you to know that Scott Paper Company introduced the Paper Towel to the public in 1931 and was due to an error in manufacturing?

A load of paper had been manufactured too thick for their infamous toilet paper so instead of sending the shipment back, Arthur Scott had heard of a teacher who in the city school who gave the children small pieces of soft paper to use to help fight colds spreading in the schools. She gave each child a small piece of soft paper to use, this way the roller in the toilets would not be contaminated with the cold germs.

Arthur Scott decided to use the extra thick paper and perforated it into smaller towel size sheets and sold them as disposable paper towels, which were renamed Sani-Towels and were sold to hotels and restaurants for use in public washrooms.

In 1931, the first paper towel for the kitchen was created and sold to the public. It took many years for the paper towel to gain popularity and has since just about replaced dish towels.
