Skip Counting Tales
1. Talk about the way that the dancers are grouped by 2's.
2. Ask the children to form pairs and imitate the positions of the dancers.
3. Count the dancers by 2's.

I'd like to thank John R Keyser for permission to use this image of pairs of dancers.
Chant the college football cheer:
Two, four, six, eight,
Who do we appreciate?
Susie, Susie, Yeah!
Substitute names of each of the children in class. Not only does using their names make the children feel important but it also encourages repeating the sequence over and over.
This chant works well as a song to sing when lining up to go to recess, lunch or as a chant to acknowledge an accomplishment.
Can you think of any other songs or chants that can be turned into Skip Counting songs?
Mooove Over: A Book about Counting by Two's
A Skip Couting Tale

The animals get on the bus in pairs as the bus driver counts by two's until the cow cuts in line and messes him all up.
We found these pictures of pairs of animals, wrote the names of the animals under each picture and attached them to old wine corks. Then we turned an egg carton into a bus and counted the animals as they got on and off the bus by 2's.
We have also used animals from a Noah's Arc set to reenact the story from Mooove Over and then Skip Counted the animals by 2's as they entered the Arc.

Skipping Song
Sing while Skip Counting
When I'm in a hurry
To count up something long,
I skip some of the numbers
As I sing this song.
Two, four, six, eight chicks I saw
With a mother hen.
Ten, twelve, fourteen, sixteen.
Count them all again.

(chorus)
Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty
Pennies on the floor.
To get up to a hundred
I'll need fifty more.
(chorus)
When counting pennies, line them up two by two and skip count by 2's.

Skip Counting the Animals from Noah's Ark
Count Noah's Arc Animals by 2's

In th 1700's, "Sunday" toys, such as this Noah's Ark from the Museum of American Heritage were quite elaborate, considering the austerity of the time period. This European set was made in 1800. A Noah's Ark toy could carry up to one hundred pairs of animals as well as Noah and his family.
Help the animals enter Noah's Arc and skip count by 2's to see how many animals are on the boat.

Skip Counting ABAB Patterns
Patterns are fun to Skip Count

Ask the children to made patterns. Simple patterns such as an ABAB pattern lend themselves easily to Skip Counting. Let the children use Pointers as they skip count the number of items in the pattern.
Make copies of baby birds flying. Color half of them one color and the other half another color. Laminate them and use them to make ABAB patterns. Add Velcro to the back to use on a Flannel Board.

Become a Skip Count Pattern
Have the children form a circle and as they count off by 2's the even numbered children stand and the odd numbered children sit.
Now count the children by 2's pointing to the ones standing.
This needs to be done in a circle rather than a line so that the children can see what's going on rather than just the teacher.
If you are homeschooling, and don't have enough children just substitute Barbie Dolls or Stuffed Animals.
Variation: The toys could also line up one facing the center and the next with their back to the center as in the illustrations above.

Frog Unit Study Skip Counting Game
Write a number line 0-100 on the playground with the numbers big enough for a child to step on each one without touching the next. Putting them about 1 foot apart works well. Painting them on is ideal as they won't disappear the way chalk would.
Children start on 0 then step on 1 (don't click), 2 click, 3, 4 click, 5 , 6 click etc. The children whisper the numbers they are stepping on and click on the numbers in the 2's skip counting series. When they get to 100 they jump in the air and shout "Ribbit"
My students liked this game so much that they often ask to use the frog clickers to practice skip counting during Recess.

Understanding Skip Counting by 2's through the Odds and Evens Game

Playing the game of Odds and Evens offers a kinesthetic approach to understanding the concept of Skip Counting and counting on.
By playing this game children with see that numbers are paired to make twos and that two odd numbers left over become a new pair of twos.

How To Play The Game
Each player declares if they will be either "odds' or "evens".
Then both players clench their fists, count to three, and each player - at the same time - opens one hand, extending one or more fingers.
If the combined number of fingers is equal to an odd number - the player declaring "odds" wins. If the combined number is equal to an even number - "evens" wins. The girl at the left in the picture is counting fingers! - Spooky Skip Counting

Fairy Tales come in Threes
Skip Count the Fairytales

Tobias Turkey and his friends are making Thanksgiving decorations. Each child makes three. How many do four children make? How many do five make? How many do six make?" Five Thanksgiving-themed skip counting (by threes) word problems.
Buddy and Brenda Squirrel make 8 Thanksgiving Pies with handprint Turkeys on each one. How many fingers are on all the pies together? In the Fall it's fun to collect acorns or brightly colored leaves. Maple leaves have 5 points. Count the number of points on the leaves by 5's. Acorns can be put into groups of 3's and counted by threes.
These three tales are downloadable MobiStories that not only can entertain your child for a few minutes while you are taking a shower, frying donuts or answering the phone, but also help your child learn to read and promote early literacy.

Skip Counting Tri-Cornered Hats
Author: Unknown
My hat, it hath three corners,
Three corners hath my hat
And had it not three corners,
It would not be my hat.
When you are doing a Unit Study such as Garner Rix and the Royalton Raid you could make Tricorns and then skip count to see how many corners all of your hats together have.
Now add people's names to the verse:
Garner's hat, it hath three corners,
Three corners hath his hat
And had it not three corners,
It would not be his hat.
3, 6, 9, 12 etc
Have each child that has had his or her verse sung move to the front of the class and skip count by threes, pointing to each child as the refrain between each verse.

Skip Counting Lines in Poetry

You can obtain a copy of Poem Stew by William Cole by clicking on the smaller picture above.
- Poem Stew Unit Study
- Wende used the poems in the book Poem Stew by William Cole to create a Poem Unit Study. She even included ideas for Skip Counting using the poetry from this book:
Skip Counting by 2's - A couplet is a stanza containing two lines. Find poems throughout Poem Stew that contain couplets. Tableau at Twilight is a good example. Skip counting by twos, have your child add the total number of lines in the poems.
Skip counting by 4's - Many of the poems throughout this book have quatrains, which are stanzas containing four lines. Have your child pick out the poems with quatrains, and counting by 4's, add up the total number of lines.
Skip Counting by 5's - Some poems have five line stanzas, called quintets. An example is Two Birds with One Stone. Skip count by fives, adding the total lines.
Be sure to check out the rest of Wende's Poem Stew Unit Study.
The Quadrille is Danced by Groups of Four Couples
Skip Count to see how many Dancers
Another dance related to the Quadrille, and thus are applicable to skip counting by 4, is Square Dancing,

The Lobster Quadrille is mentioned in Lewis Carrol's Alice in Wonderland. When we were learning about lobsters we made a set of Lobster Lima Beans by spray painting them red on one side and greenish-brown on the other.
You can use a fine-tipped permanent marker to draw in the features and hairspray as a fixative.
Use these Lima Bean Lobsters to form the sets for the Lobster Quadrille with the red side being one partner and the green as the other partner. Now you can skip count to see how many dancers there are joining in the dance.
- Quadrille

Quadrille is a historic dance performed by four couples in a square formation, a precursor to traditional square dancing. - Wikipedia- The Lobster Quadrille

Skip Counting by Fives

The Five Little Peppers
Counting by 5's is a skill needed in counting tally marks. We keep a running tally of the days since school started. Counting these tally marks daily reinforces the skill of counting by 5's and leads to knowing the 5's Multiplication Table.

Buttons are very handy to have when learning math but any small objects in large quantities will do.
At the Art Center put out a containter of buttons, glue and stiff cardstock or cardboard squares.
Use lots of glue to glue 5 buttons on each square.
Try to make as many different patterns as possible with just 5 buttons.
Make sure the children know where to put the squares for drying and don't forget to model how to clean up glue spills.
Use these cards for counting by 5's.

Kernel Count!
"Place a small handful of popcorn kernels (or chocolate morsels, mini marshmallows, paper clips, etc.) on the table between you and your child. There should be fewer than 100 pieces of the object.
Both players roll a number cube or a die. The player who rolls the higher number counts out 5 kernels and slides the group to his side of the table. If both players roll the same number, they both roll the number cube again to break the tie.
The players continue to roll the number cube, and each time, the player with the highest number takes a group of 5 kernels.
Keep the groups of 5 separate so that they can be counted by 5s later.
When no more groups of 5 can be made, the players count by 5s to see which player has collected more kernels."
Use a hundreds chart to assist your child in counting by fives. As he selects one group of five, he should color the number 5 on the 100 chart. As he selects the next group of five, he should say 10 and color the ten on the chart. Continue in this manner until all the groups of 5 have been counted.
If your child has difficulty counting by fives independently, you can color the numbers for skip counting by 5 on the 100 chart. At the end of the game, as your child counts his kernels, he can say the highlighted numbers on the chart to help him skip count.

Hand Play Skip Counting
Counting the Fingers on Top by 5's

Father's Hands
Most children remember playing the game where the bottom hand is always put on top.
As children get older they can start to play the game while counting the fingers that land on the top by 5's. When you get to 100 it's time to go fast and silly.
- WHOSE HAND IS ON TOP?
- DIRECTIONS:
Put your hand on the table and ask your little one to put hers on top of yours. Then put your other hand on top of her hand and ask her to put her other hand on the top of the hand pile.
Then you pull your first hand out from under the pile of hands and put it back on top. Encourage her to do the same with her hand that is now on the bottom.
Keep repeating this pattern with the hand on the bottom of the pile moving to the top. Start very slowly at first until she gets the idea and then begin to speed up the action.

When you are ready to go beyond the numbers in a month just add a grid below and write the numbers in.
This also makes a nice center for two children to work together picking a number and counting by sevens. They love to use pointers for this activity.
You could glue the number seven to the end of a ruler or paint paddle to make a Skip Counting by 7's Pointer.

Chisanbop is an abacus-like finger counting method used to perform basic mathematical operations.
Chisanbop was created in the 1940s in Korea by Sung Jin Pai and revised by his son Hang Young Pai. It was brought to the U.S. around 1977 by Hang Young Pai.
With this method it is possible to display all numbers from 0 to 99 with both hands.

Counting Thanksgiving Pumpkin Pies
Skip Counting Pies

As Thanksgiving nears we learn more and more about place value. We count more seeds and make more accurate predictions of the number of seeds in the pumpkin.
Can we make 100 pumpkin pies?
We send a survey home asking for a pumpkin pie count. Children ask family members how many pies they will make for Thanksgiving Dinner. The children color a pie for each family member or friend that will be making or bringing a pumpkin pie to their Thanksgiving Dinner.
These pies are attached to a 10 X 10 grid at first in ones and then in columns of 10 and possibly more tens and ones columns if needed.
Making the graph, attaching pies that look like pies and counting the pies daily as new ones come in help the visual and auditory learners internalize the concept of place value. Attaching the pumpkin pies helps the tactile learners. If you chant in a sing songy voice as your count the pies maybe starting with the verse from Over the River and Through the Woods that ends with Hurrah for the Pumpkin Pie you will also include the musical learners.
Over the river and through the wood --
Now Grandmother's cap I spy!

Skip Counting by 12's

Though not strictly a book about skip counting. It is a hilarious book about a family with twelve children. Though the children do attend school, they also add many types of homeschooling activities to their daily lives. As in most instances, the book is far superior to the movie.
Our family loved this book when I read it to them as a read aloud. We also enjoyed trying out some of homeschooling activities like learning languages in the bathroom and posting the constellations on the dining room wall.
As we read the book we also thought about the dozens of items that they would need each day and turned that into an opportunity to Skip Count by 12's.
How many forks would be set on the table in a day?
How many cookies would be eaten if each child ate one cookie? two cookies? etc.
How many books needed to be taken out of the library if each child took out 4 books?
You might be temped to watch the movies but I found the book to be much funnier and have been a topic of conversation in our family for years.

Skip Counting on the Hundreds Board
Bridging across barriers such as 100 causes difficulties in skip counting. For example, when asked to count backwards from 120 by tens, some students will say: 120, 110, 190, 180, 170 %u2026 and stop part way through the sequence as they realise they have already said some of the numbers before. Alternatively students may omit 100, saying 120, 110, 90, 80 %u2026 10.
At an earlier stage, students will have difficulty crossing tens barriers when counting backwards by 2s (e.g. 24, 22, 20, unsure ...)

Have children put Unifix cubes on numbers as they skip count along the hundreds board. The John Holt's activity I mentioned went as following. You use graph paper (of course - always use graph paper for math) and cut a thin strip. Put your counting or skip-counting numbers in it. Tape next strips as needed. Try to predict - how long will your strip need to be to get off the table? To reach all the way to the floor? Across the room? Will 1000 be enough? Etc. It's very fascinating, even hypnotic when you write those numbers and grow your strip longer and longer... and longer! Some kids want to skip more and more, say, skipping by fives, then by tens, then by twenties, so it's a natural lead into skip counting. Some want to fill in every cell meticulously. This activity is great for number sense.

* relating factors to their multiples
* developing number sense about multiplication and division relationships
Constructing Multiplication and Division
Skip Counting is a Pre-multiplication Skill

Young Mathematicians at Work helps children to develop an understanding of multiplication and division in grades 3-5. Some of the ideas can be adapted to younger grades.
It describes and illustrates what it means to do and learn mathematics.
It provides strategies to help teachers turn their classrooms into math workshops that encourage and reflect mathematizing which is a concept I first learned about through Marilyn Burns work.
Marilyn Burns believes that children come to understand math better when they are able to explain it both verbally and in writing. Math Journals came out of this concept as well.
Skip Counting Leads to Understanding Multiplication
Skip counting to Multiplication

- Mulitdiscipline Activies With The Letters X & Z
- Introducing The Multiplication Sign X
- Skip, Skip, Skip is the Glue
- Skip counting reveals and clarifies much of the basic structure and order inherently present in the field of whole numbers, which in turn leads to a more solid and connected mastery of the basic arithmetic operations.
Going Beyond Skip Counting
From Skip Counting to Multiplication Facts

Children need lots of practice when making the transition from concrete to abstract when learning to multiply. One of the best workbooks I have ever found are the books by Susan Greenwald at Longevity Publishing.
Her books give simple reminders of how multiplication works, how to continue on from Skip Counting to multiplication and offer plenty of equations for students to work on. Be sure to check out the sample pages.

- Five Times Five Is Not Ten: Make Multiplication Easy
Designed for any age student who still counts to get answers, this workbook focuses on teaching strategies to learn the multiplication facts.
