Chant the college football cheer:
Two, four, six, eight,
Who do we appreciate?
Susie, Susie, Yeah!
Substitute names of each of the children in class. Not only does using their names make the children feel important but it also encourages repeating the sequence over and over.
This chant works well as a song to sing when lining up to go to recess, lunch or as a chant to acknowledge an accomplishment.
Can you think of any other songs or chants that can be turned into Skip Counting songs?

(Amazon) Noah's Ark by Cargill, Melanie (Allposters)
The animals get on the bus in pairs as the bus driver counts by two's until the cow cuts in line and messes him all up.
We found these pictures of pairs of animals, wrote the names of the animals under each picture and attached them to old wine corks. Then we turned an egg carton into a bus and counted the animals as they got on and off the bus by 2's.
We have also used animals from a Noah's Ark set to reenact the story from Mooove Over and then Skip Counted the animals by 2's as they entered the Arc.

Skip Counting the Unschooling Way
Today we will introduce an activity that John Holt describes in his book, How Children Learn.1. Show the children how to cut graph paper into long strips. (We found it worked best to use one inch graph paper to allow enough room for writing large numbers.)
2. Write numbers in each box.
3. Tape more strips on as needed.
4. Predict how long the strip will need to be to go off the table, to reach the floor, or to go all the way across the room. Will 1000 squares be enough?

Some kids want to skip more and more, say, skipping by fives, then by tens, then by twenties, so it's a natural lead into skip counting. Some want to fill in every cell meticulously. If the children wish to skip count, remind them to make sure that they are leaving the correct number of spaces between each skip counted number.
This activity can really help children gain number sense.
Skip Counting the Hens

Now Skip Count by 2's to see how many chickens:
This poster shows pairs of hens and roosters. By grouping the chickens together like this we can skip count by 2's to see how many chickens in all. Skip count as you put your finger on each pair of chickens. My children love to end the skip counting by doing a clucking cheer while flapping their wings.

- Eloise's children were small when faced with learning Skip Counting but she has some wonderful suggestions for making the concept come alive.
By using socks to count by 2's, Eloise's child was able to experience the concept in a concrete and fun way.
Later she was able to work with the concept in another concrete way by using frogs to skip count on the Hundred's Board.

Skip Counting ABAB Patterns
Patterns are fun to Skip Count

Ask the children to made patterns. Simple patterns such as an ABAB pattern lend themselves easily to Skip Counting. Let the children use a Pointers as they skip count the number of items in the pattern.
Make copies of baby birds flying. Color half of them one color and the other half another color. Laminate them and use them to make ABAB patterns. Add Velcro to the back to use on a Flannel Board.
This is a great activity to do on National Handwriting Day. Save the pictures to use as a bulletin board boarder for spring.

This activity was inspired by a trip we took to the Everglades during nesting season one year. In each tree there were several nests of Anhingas with eggs in each one. Going back the next week each of the nests had baby Anhingas. We went back weekly to see them until they all finally fledged.
Children color the eggs in the nest, cut them out and attach them to a tree on the bulletin board. How many birds could hatch from all the eggs together? Skip Count by 2's to see how many eggs are in the nests.

Write a number line 0-100 on the playground with the numbers big enough for a child to step on each one without touching the next. Putting them about 1 foot apart works well. Painting them on is ideal as they won't disappear the way chalk would.
Children start on 0 then step on 1 (don't click), 2 click, 3, 4 click, 5 , 6 click etc. The children whisper the numbers they are stepping on and click on the numbers in the 2's skip counting series. When they get to 100 they jump in the air and shout "Ribbit"
My students liked this game so much that they often ask to use the frog clickers to practice skip counting during Recess.

3, 6, 9, 12 etc
Have each child that has had his or her verse sung move to the front of the class and skip count by threes, pointing to each child as the refrain between each verse.
To make a quick paper tricornered hat:
1. Start with Butcher Paper
2. Cut an oval the diameter of the child's head
3. Cut a circle about three inches wider around the oval to form the brim.
4. Us a hole punch to punch 6 holes equally distanced around the edge of the rim.
5. Cut 3 pieces of string or yarn and thread through every two hole and tie loosely.
You now have a tricornered hat. Once all of the children have their hats on, skip count by 3's to see how many corners they have on their heads.

What kinds of things come in fours? Fours are fun to skip count. 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32. How many different things can you think of that we could skip count by fours. Do you have buttons with four holes in each? Look at dad's button down shirt. Skip count by fours to see how many button holes dad has on his shirt.
As you notice more and more things that come in fours just add to the list and vote on the ones that you have tried or would like to try skip counting.

Look around you. Some pretty interesting things come in 4's. Some pretty ordinary things come in 4's as well. You could start making a book of 4's illustrating things that you can count by 4's. Another idea would be to put them on an index card for the next time you need to go on a boring errand. Pick a card and have so much fun counting by 4's that you forget to be bored.
The buttons in a man's button down shirt usually have 4 holes in each. You can count the holes down the front of a man's shirt by counting by 4's.
When my children did this activity, we added the button holes by adding four dots to each button. Then we wrote the skip counting by 4's number or number sentence beside each button. Some children added buttons to the cuffs and collar in order to continue skip counting higher numbers.
How about counting the holes on your teacher's shirt, the principal's shirt, or your dad's shirt?

- Skip Counting by 2's - A couplet is a stanza containing two lines. Find poems throughout Poem Stew that contain couplets. Tableau at Twilight is a good example. Skip counting by twos, have your child add the total number of lines in the poems.
Skip counting by 4's - Many of the poems throughout this book have quatrains, which are stanzas containing four lines. Have your child pick out the poems with quatrains, and counting by 4's, add up the total number of lines.
Skip Counting by 5's - Some poems have five line stanzas, called quintets. An example is Two Birds with One Stone. Skip count by fives, adding the total lines.

The Quadrille is Danced by Groups of Four Couples
Skip Count to see how many Dancers
Another dance related to the Quadrille, and thus applicable to skip counting by 4's, is Square Dancing,
The Lobster Quadrille is mentioned in Lewis Carrol's Alice in Wonderland. When we were learning about lobsters we made a set of Lobster Lima Beans by spray painting them red on one side and greenish-brown on the other.
You can use a fine-tipped permanent marker to draw in the features and hairspray as a fixative.
Use these Lima Bean Lobsters to form the sets for the Lobster Quadrille with the red side being one partner and the green as the other partner. Now you can skip count to see how many dancers there are joining in the dance.

- Quadrupedalism is a form of land animal locomotion using four limbs or legs. An animal or machine that usually moves in a quadrupedal manner is known as a quadruped, meaning "four feet" (from the Latin quad for "four" and ped for "foot").
Does being a quadruped make it easier for animals to dance the quadrille?

While giving you some tips for teaching skip-counting, I will also show you how to adapt any lesson to cover each of the various learning styles.
Covering all learning styles in a lesson will enable all of your students to learn the material at the same time and give each student a more complete understanding of the material being presented.
Four Square Skip Counting
Skip Counting Ball Game
We modified the game of Four Square by labeling the squares with multiples of 4. We made more than one square and had the squares go in progression. The first square was labeled 4, 8, 12, 16. The next square was labeled 20, 24, 28, 32. Just make as many squares as you need to accommodate the number of students you are teaching.
When someone in the second square is out, the person on the box labeled 16 takes their place and the person from the second box goes to the back of the line to start at number 4 again. Can you make it all the way to the top square?
Note: Each square waits until play ends in the square below them in order to add a new player. There will be a player from each of the upper squares going back to the line at the beginning of the first square. Just stay in order as you move up the squares. Try saying the number you are on as you play the ball. It will help with learning the multiples of 4.

Kernel Count!
"Place a small handful of popcorn kernels on the table between you and your partner. There should be fewer than 100 pieces of the object.
Both players roll a number cube or a die. The player who rolls the higher number counts out 5 kernels and slides the group to his side of the table. If both players roll the same number, they both roll the number cube again to break the tie.
The players continue to roll the number cube, and each time, the player with the highest number takes a group of 5 kernels.
Keep the groups of 5 separate so that they can be counted by fives later.
When no more groups of 5 can be made, the players count by fives to see which player has collected more kernels."
Use a hundreds chart to assist your child in counting by fives. As he selects one group of five, he should color the number 5 on the 100 chart. As he selects the next group of five, he should say 10 and color the ten on the chart. Continue in this manner until all the groups of 5 have been counted.

Most children remember playing the game where the bottom hand is always put on top.
As children get older they can start to play the game while counting the fingers that land on the top by 5's. When you get to 100 it's time to go fast and silly.
- WHOSE HAND IS ON TOP?
- DIRECTIONS:
Put your hand on the table and ask your little one to put hers on top of yours. Then put your other hand on top of her hand and ask her to put her other hand on the top of the hand pile.
Then you pull your first hand out from under the pile of hands and put it back on top. Encourage her to do the same with her hand that is now on the bottom.
Keep repeating this pattern with the hand on the bottom of the pile moving to the top. Start very slowly at first until she gets the idea and then begin to speed up the action.

Eight Reindeer and their Gifts
Gifts for the Eight Tiny Little Reindeer
Did you remember that Santa had eight tiny little reindeer? Each of the reindeer wore a string of bells. Santa wanted to make sure that each reindeer had the same number of bells so he passed the bells around one at a time. Each time he needed to remove 8 bells. As Santa removes the bells and passes them out you can count by 8's to see how many bells Santa has removed from from the box.
1. As a math workjob or mathmat you could place a placemat with eight reindeer on it on the table. The children place one bell on each reindeer and count 8.
2. Then they place another bell on each reindeer and count 16 etc.
3. Continue unitl they get to 9 bells on each reindeer for 72 total bells.
As an alternative to a placemat you could use reindeer coasters.
1. Roll two dice to see how many reindeer Santa will hook up to his sleigh.
2. Place that number of Reindeer Coasters on the table.
3. Now give each of these reindeer 8 bells.
How many bells did Santa need for the reindeer that night? Count by 8's to figure the answer.

We send a survey home asking for a pumpkin pie count. Children ask family members how many pies they will make for Thanksgiving Dinner. The children color a pie for each family member or friend that will be making or bringing a pumpkin pie to their Thanksgiving Dinner.
These pies are attached to a 10 X 10 grid at first in ones and then in columns of 10 and possibly more tens and ones columns if needed.
Making the graph, attaching pies that look like pies and counting the pies daily as new ones come in help the visual and auditory learners internalize the concept of place value. Attaching the pumpkin pies helps the tactile learners. If you chant in a sing songy voice as your count the pies maybe starting with the verse from Over the River and Through the Woods that ends with Hurrah for the Pumpkin Pie you will also include the musical learners.

- The quipu consists of strings which were knotted to represent numbers. A number was represented by knots in the string, using a positional base 10 representation. If the number 586 was to be recorded on the string then six touching knots were placed near the free end of the string, a space was left, then eight touching knots for the 10s, another space, and finally 5 touching knots for the 100s.

Skip Counting by 12's

Though not strictly a book about skip counting. It is a hilarious book about a family with twelve children. Though the children do attend school, they also add many types of homeschooling activities to their daily lives. As in most instances, the book is far superior to the movie.
Our family loved this book when I read it to them as a read aloud. We also enjoyed trying out some of homeschooling activities like learning languages in the bathroom and posting the constellations on the dining room wall.
As we read the book we also thought about the dozens of items that they would need each day and turned that into an opportunity to Skip Count by 12's.
How many forks would be set on the table in a day?
How many cookies would be eaten if each child ate one cookie? two cookies? etc.
How many books needed to be taken out of the library if each child took out 4 books?
You might be temped to watch the movies but I found the book to be much funnier and have been a topic of conversation in our family for years.

Constructing Multiplication and Division
Skip Counting is a Pre-multiplication Skill
Young Mathematicians at Work helps children to develop an understanding of multiplication and division in grades 3-5. Some of the ideas can be adapted to younger grades.
It describes and illustrates what it means to do and learn mathematics.
It provides strategies to help teachers turn their classrooms into math workshops that encourage and reflect mathematizing which is a concept I first learned about through Marilyn Burns work.
Marilyn Burns believes that children come to understand math better when they are able to explain it both verbally and in writing. Math Journals came out of this concept as well.
