Mooove Over: A Book about Counting by Two's 

A Skip Couting Tale

The animals get on the bus in pairs as the bus driver counts by two's until the cow cuts in line and messes him all up.

We found these pictures of pairs of animals, wrote the names of the animals under each picture and attached them to old wine corks. Then we turned an egg carton into a bus and counted the animals as they got on and off the bus by 2's.

We have also used animals from a Noah's Arc set to reenact the story from Mooove Over and then Skip Counted the animals by 2's as they entered the Arc.

Some children will start to notice patterns such as when you skip count by nines, the tens digit goes up counting by ones and the ones digit counts backwards.

Many people have baby socks that are almost never worn. Ask parents to send them in. These socks can be used for sorting, patterns and for counting.

1. Hang up a clothesline along a wall.
2. Children sort the socks and use clothespins to hang them in pairs.
3. Count the socks by 2's.

Clothespins are good for improving fine motor coordination.

Patterns are fun to Skip Count

Ask the children to made patterns. Simple patterns such as an ABAB pattern lend themselves easily to Skip Counting. Let the children use Pointers as they skip count the number of items in the pattern.

Make copies of baby birds flying. Color half of them one color and the other half another color. Laminate them and use them to make ABAB patterns. Add Velcro to the back to use on a Flannel Board.

Variation:
Laminate them and roll dice to see how many nests and then skip count to see how many eggs.

Counting by 2's People Pattern 

Become a Skip Count Pattern

Have the children form a circle and as they count off by 2's the even numbered children stand and the odd numbered children sit.

Now count the children by 2's pointing to the ones standing.

This needs to be done in a circle rather than a line so that the children can see what's going on rather than just the teacher.

If you are homeschooling, and don't have enough children just substitute Barbie Dolls or Stuffed Animals.

Variation: The toys could also line up one facing the center and the next with their back to the center as in the illustrations above.

Playing the game of Odds and Evens offers a kinesthetic approach to understanding the concept of Skip Counting and counting on.

By playing this game children with see that numbers are paired to make twos and that two odd numbers left over become a new pair of twos.

How To Play The Game

Each player declares if they will be either "odds' or "evens".

Then both players clench their fists, count to three, and each player - at the same time - opens one hand, extending one or more fingers.

If the combined number of fingers is equal to an odd number - the player declaring "odds" wins. If the combined number is equal to an even number - "evens" wins. The girl at the left in the picture is counting fingers!

Poem Stew Unit Study

Wende used the poems in the book Poem Stew by William Cole to create a Poem Unit Study. She even included ideas for Skip Counting using the poetry from this book:

Skip Counting by 2's - A couplet is a stanza containing two lines. Find poems throughout Poem Stew that contain couplets. Tableau at Twilight is a good example. Skip counting by twos, have your child add the total number of lines in the poems.

Skip counting by 4's - Many of the poems throughout this book have quatrains, which are stanzas containing four lines. Have your child pick out the poems with quatrains, and counting by 4's, add up the total number of lines.

Skip Counting by 5's - Some poems have five line stanzas, called quintets. An example is Two Birds with One Stone. Skip count by fives, adding the total lines.

The Quadrille is Danced by Groups of Four Couples 

Skip Count to see how many Dancers

The Quadrille is danced by groups of four couples. Teach the children how to dance the Quadrille and then organize the class so that as many sets as possible can dance. Children can skip count to see how many dancers are able to dance at once.

Another dance related to the Quadrille, and thus are applicable to skip counting by 4, is Square Dancing,



The Lobster Quadrille is mentioned in Lewis Carrol's Alice in Wonderland. When we were learning about lobsters we made a set of Lobster Lima Beans by spray painting them red on one side and greenish-brown on the other.

You can use a fine-tipped permanent marker to draw in the features and hairspray as a fixative.

Use these Lima Bean Lobsters to form the sets for the Lobster Quadrille with the red side being one partner and the green as the other partner. Now you can skip count to see how many dancers there are joining in the dance.

Scrambled Eggs

Distribute large cards with multiples of 5 to students. Ask students to quietly assemble themselves in correct order, holding the card in front of them. Time the class in this activity, if this motivates your class to master the sequence.

NOTE: Cheap, white paper plates work well for this activity. Write large numbers with a black sharpie pen. Paper plates stack easily for storage and also hold up well through repeated use.

Kernel Count!

"Place a small handful of popcorn kernels (or chocolate morsels, mini marshmallows, paper clips, etc.) on the table between you and your child. There should be fewer than 100 pieces of the object.

Both players roll a number cube or a die. The player who rolls the higher number counts out 5 kernels and slides the group to his side of the table. If both players roll the same number, they both roll the number cube again to break the tie.

The players continue to roll the number cube, and each time, the player with the highest number takes a group of 5 kernels.

Keep the groups of 5 separate so that they can be counted by 5s later.

When no more groups of 5 can be made, the players count by 5s to see which player has collected more kernels."

Use a hundreds chart to assist your child in counting by fives. As he selects one group of five, he should color the number 5 on the 100 chart. As he selects the next group of five, he should say 10 and color the ten on the chart. Continue in this manner until all the groups of 5 have been counted.

If your child has difficulty counting by fives independently, you can color the numbers for skip counting by 5 on the 100 chart. At the end of the game, as your child counts his kernels, he can say the highlighted numbers on the chart to help him skip count.

Most children remember playing the game where the bottom hand is always put on top.

As children get older they can start to play the game while counting the fingers that land on the top by 5's. When you get to 100 it's time to go fast and silly.

WHOSE HAND IS ON TOP?

DIRECTIONS:
Put your hand on the table and ask your little one to put hers on top of yours. Then put your other hand on top of her hand and ask her to put her other hand on the top of the hand pile.

Then you pull your first hand out from under the pile of hands and put it back on top. Encourage her to do the same with her hand that is now on the bottom.

Keep repeating this pattern with the hand on the bottom of the pile moving to the top. Start very slowly at first until she gets the idea and then begin to speed up the action.

National High Five Day will be celebrated on April 16, 2009, the third Thursday in April.

1. Form two lines facing eachother as in contra dancing.
2. Everyone goes forward and back.

4.. The first couple then starts down the line.
5. They weave down the line and as they greet each person in line everyone shouts 5 as they give a high five.

Skip Count by Nines

Chisanbop is an abacus-like finger counting method used to perform basic mathematical operations.

Chisanbop was created in the 1940s in Korea by Sung Jin Pai and revised by his son Hang Young Pai. It was brought to the U.S. around 1977 by Hang Young Pai.

With this method it is possible to display all numbers from 0 to 99 with both hands.

You can use a modified quipu to help children keep track of counting large numbers of objects and then practice skip counting to see how many they have counted.

1. Give a piece of string to each child or pair of children.
2. Take a handful of beans and have the children count ten beans at a time.
3. Put the ten beans into a jar and tie a know in a string.
4. Skip Count by 10's to see how many beans you have counted.

Inca mathematics

The quipu consists of strings which were knotted to represent numbers. A number was represented by knots in the string, using a positional base 10 representation. If the number 586 was to be recorded on the string then six touching knots were placed near the free end of the string, a space was left, then eight touching knots for the 10s, another space, and finally 5 touching knots for the 100s.

It's a great way to learn to multiply and divide. You use both hands when singing the songs. So those very tactile, visual, auditory learners have great success with this method.

Hands-on Skip Counting 

Eloise's children were small when faced with learning Skip Counting but she has some wonderful suggestions for making the concept come alive.

By using socks to count by 2's, Eloise's child was able to experience the concept in a concrete and fun way.

Later she was able to work with the concept in a more concrete way by using frogs to skip count on the Hundred's Board.

1. Cut computer paper in half. Put it together and fold it in half. Staple the sheets on the fold to make a blank book. Cover the staples with cloth tape to keep fingers safe.

2. Make copies of pictures of holy and berries.

3. Children glue one picture on the first page and write the 3 holy leaves and 3 berries.

4. On the second page glue two pictures and write 6 holey leaves and 6 berries.

5. Continue with the rest of the book.

6. Make up and write a story to go with the pictures. Writing about math helps to cement the concepts being learned and the story will be one that children will love to read over and over again especially with relatives coming for the holidays.

Skip counting can be so much fun. Today we counted the number of eyes in our classroom by 2's, the number of fingers by 5's, and then took off our shoes to count our toes by 10's.

We then started to talk about things that normally come in 2's, 3's, 4's etc. and will start making art projects with those number of objects. I plan to take pictures of the art projects and then turn them into class books.

Student Donate 100 Cans of Food

Pre-kindergartners through first-graders at West Madison Elementary School donated 100 cans of food for the food pantry.

The kids enjoyed seeing how big a 100-can tower can get and felt good about helping people in need, said teacher Kym Mittman

Patti Lang, whose son Kit is in Mittman's class, suggested the community service project to recognize the 100th day.

Christmas Skip Counting

Ask parent's to donate used wrapping paper or leftovers that would otherwise be thrown out.

Look for paper that has patterns that are easily counted.

Children circle groups of objects and then use skip counting to determine the number on the page.

HINTS:

1. If you laminate the sheets they can be used over and over.

2. Write the answer on the back for self-checking.

3. Roll dice to determine the number of objects in each set and use that number to Skip Count by.

4. After circling all the sets, write a multiplication equation to show your work.

Real Life Homeschool: Counting by Twos

Fuchsia is getting really good at skip counting. What I hit on was this: write out a number line, make a dot above the 2, then make a curving line from the dot at 2 to a dot at 4. Then ask Fuchsia, "Where do we jump next when we count by twos?".
