Fascinating lens. I never thought of Skip Counting as being multiplication before. I agree that learning has to be fun and that's how I taught my children. It's so important that they get a good start to the learning process. They're all grown up now - happy days!
    Mike.
  • MariaD Feb 1, 2009 @ 4:42 pm | delete
The John Holt's activity I mentioned went as following. You use graph paper (of course - always use graph paper for math) and cut a thin strip. Put your counting or skip-counting numbers in it. Tape next strips as needed. Try to predict - how long will your strip need to be to get off the table? To reach all the way to the floor? Across the room? Will 1000 be enough? Etc. It's very fascinating, even hypnotic when you write those numbers and grow your strip longer and longer... and longer! Some kids want to skip more and more, say, skipping by fives, then by tens, then by twenties, so it's a natural lead into skip counting. Some want to fill in every cell meticulously. This activity is great for number sense.

Thanks for your lens - I just emailed it to a math loop where people asked about skip counting! Rock on!
  • EverythingMouse Jan 10, 2009 @ 11:09 pm | delete
As always an excellent lens. I try and relate real life to my children with all teaching as I find it helps them to know that there is a purpose behind all learning rather than just learning something 'because you have to'. Skip counting is one of those things that I think people use all the time as second nature.

Stop by the Lilliput Station Online Christmas Party and download our "goodie bag" which contains a brand new set of skip counting drill sheets!

I love the idea of skip counting with cheaper by the dozen. I have seven kids and I did something similar with my four year old a few days ago. I was passing out potato chips and my daughter started counting them as I put them down (it has to be even, you know), so we turned it into a counting exercise and learned to count by sevens.

After we learned skip counting, to make the transition to understanding multiplication, I would say "two, four times, is eight" instead of "2x4 is 8." It really helped them understand WHAT "times" meant. Great lens, thanks for all the resources! 5*
