Fun and Whimsy in a Country Style Garden
Country style gardens invoke a sense of whimsy, freedom and sometimes silliness. Almost anything goes. I love country gardening. Planting is simpler, decorating is easy and you can just about add anything you want - old bicycles, chairs and even claw foot tubs have all been used as planters and decor.
If you want something easy and care-free, then a country style garden is for you. Come on in and take a look around and get some ideas for your country garden.

What Types of Flowers to Use in a Country Style Garden?
The best thing about a country style garden is that there are no real "boundaries" so to speak when planning and planting. There are such a wide variety of plants you can use and the sky is the limit! Here is a list of the most commonly used flowers in a country or cottage garden:Perennials:
Astilbe
Bee Balm
Black-Eyed Susans
Butterfly Weed
Daisies
Heather
Iris
Lamb's Ears
Lavender
Lilac
Lily of the Valley
Periwinkle
Purple Coneflower
Roses
Salvia
Sunflowers
Yarrow
Annuals:
Bachelor's Button
Begonia
Geraniums
Impatiens
Marigolds
Nasturtium
Pansies
Snapdragon
Strawflower
Sweet Alyssum
Of course these are just a few of the many flowers you can use in your country style garden, but I couldn't possibly list them all. These are all basicly easy to grow and are recommended for the average home gardener.

How to Decorate a Country Style Garden
Now it Gets Fun!
Decorating a country style garden is the fun part. You can use almost anything as planters and decorations. Old metal watering cans, wooden ladders, birdhouses, metal statues, old chairs, old ceramic, brick and stone pieces, weather vanes, old garden tools, pieces of an old fence, old boots - anything that is weathered and worn will do.For me personally, I love to shop thrift stores and garage sales, always on the look-out for things I can add to my garden, porch or patio. I love the thrill of the hunt. Craigslist and E-bay are also great resources.

- Hi ljm63,
Nice Lense! My front garden is country style. All the plants 'kiss' each other. The Rudbeckia keeps creeping to the front all the time though. There's always something blooming there. Thanks for the good info. :)

- I tried making my front yard into a Country Style Garden. The bermuda grass is just so invasive. After 35 years of fighting it, I got tired and gave up the battle. Now I have daffodils, lilies, hyacinths and various other flowers popping up every spring through the grass. I like that so it's all good.

- I llive in Western North Carolina in a lovely little cabin with a view of the mountains and Chimney Rock. We wanted a vegetable garden primarily and I love herbs, so my husband put in raised beds surrounded by a split rail fence (deer) with chicken wire on the bottom (rabbits, ground hogs, racoons and etc.) Works great! I raise enough vegetables for us and all the neighbors, as well as some to sell at our local farmer's market. He has started an orchard of all self-pollinating fruit trees, so we also have cherries, apples, pears, peaches, blueberries and strawberries. I have planted lots of yarrow, iris, lantana, hollyhocks, coneflowers, butterfly bushes and roses, as well as grapes along my fence both on the outside and the inside. We have built a rustic arbor and a teepee out of native rhododendron wood. The teepee is for my Kentucky Wonder Beans.
We are now working on a greenhouse which will extend behind the cabin and border my garden where my herb border is now. This is a dead-end street but people have stopped to check it out and even the mailman asked if he could take a look.
