Succeeding Together

By Tanya Lacy

Couples Success Magazine
@couplessuccess

15 years ago, I started my business and was soon joined by my then partner (and now business partner and husband). While it has been a challenging journey working together it has also been exceptionally rewarding. The business started out working with entrepreneurs one on one and helping them look at their day to day approach in the context of success and leadership. Our programs have morphed and evolved into an experience that has yielded our clients some terrific outcomes and results. Today we call our work the 'intercept experience', you can look it up later if you like. The secret to this 'experience' we call Intercept is a way we measure our client's success factors. During this process we 'cause' a pause. We ask them to stop and reflect on what they do and the way they do it. We create time for them to review how they think, what they think and the way this impacts their Vision, Leadership, Business, Growth, Wealth, Income, Lifestyle and the way they experience life.

They say if you want to learn something, teach it. From as long ago as I can remember I have been fascinated by the philosophy of success and leadership. I have always had an insatiable appetite for wisdom. When I was 16, I was fortunate enough to have a mentor who insisted that each and every Friday afternoon, I read. I'd lock myself away in the board room from 3pm - 5pm and learn from books. The kind of books were 'Think and Grow Rich' , 'The psychology of winning', 'The Power of Positive Thinking', 'How to win friends & influence people' and 'How to master the art of selling anything'. Reading these books laid a foundation in me that was to last me a lifetime. Reading these books has helped me develop my own business and success philosophy and helped me build my own business concepts and models. I have then been able to replicate and expand our programs and serve our clients and their people. All from being mentored and encouraged to read.
Our work today is all about teaching our clients, encouraging them to be as successful and wealthy as they can be so they can serve many. This is what we call today the intercept experience. So I have books and my mentor to thank for much.

As time has marched on and the globe goes through another iteration of change, there is a trend on the horizon. This trend is that of the corporate refugee. What I mean by this, is in the not too distant future, we will see many wives and husbands join forces. One or more will leave their big business job and corporate life and take the decision to work and suceed together.

This has signalled for us the timing to more powerfully launch a program we've been doing some time for couples. We've now honed it and tweaked it and added to it. It's called Intercept Couples. This program is specifically designed to support both the individual and together vision and success of couples who live, work and play together. It's designed particularly for couples who generate their income together whether that be in a home office, in a franchise situation, in a multi level marketing company or a start up. Whatever the case, Intercept Couples serves couples who love working with those they love and want to keep it that way! If you're in Australia these programs are available in Melbourne, Perth, Gold Coast, Brisbane and Sydney. We will be doing group work too, as well as retreats, building a strong community of couples who've been Intercepted. Look up Intercept Experience to find out more.

In the meantime, the idea of this site is as a resource. If you are a couple working together, we hope you find some inspriation here. The key is - you're not alone, there are others out there doing the same thing as you. Well done! It's worth it. It if were easy, more people would be doing it. The rewards are worth it! You learn much about yourself if you are willing and prepared to learn and grow together. With 15 years behind us we can speak from experience and this is why we've launched the program. It's written by a couple for couples. Enjoy the bits and pieces on this site....Succeed together! More soon....

Couples Retreats

Treats come from retreats!

Retreat in Vanuatu? By Tanya Lacy

In our Intercept Couples program we cover a lot about Vision, joint optimism, ethos, having common purpose. Getting away and having retreats together. Some of our clients adopt the very simple action of every three months doing something that on the surface seems to make sense. It's when it doesn't happen that things go wrong, so take note or you might miss it. Want to know what it is? It's about getting away together. That's right, getting away together. Every three months or so, simply get away together. Use the time to reflect on the past period of time and plan ahead for the next period of time. Use the time to relax together, to play together and to think together. Are you still on track to your common vision? If not, what took you off the rails? If you are - well done! Start planning the next place you'll get away to.

The Story of Alicia Vargo & Pampered Passions Fine Lingerie

Pampered Passions Couple in Business

Couples in Business for Love or Money? After a negative bra shopping experience at the leading lingerie retail chain left Alicia Vargo feeling worse about her body, she decided to do something about it. In 2001 she and her husband, John, started an online fine lingerie store called Pampered Passions Fine Lingerie. The mission of her business: "Nurture the Female Spirit!"

"I recall that day vividly. I was feeling rather blah and all I wanted was something to make me feel beautiful and confident "all under." But I left the store without a package, feeling empty and un-nurtured. The store had nothing to fit my body type," she laments. "But I turned that negative experience into something positive by starting my own lingerie store. I wanted to make women feel beautiful and cared for no matter their size or shape."
With the overwhelming success of PamperedPassions.com, the couple decided to take their mission a step further by creating a physical retail store, called Pampered Passions Fine Lingerie, in Park Meadows (located in the Denver-metro area) in 2003.

"The retail store was a natural progression for us as we wanted to assist customers in a more personal way. We also wanted to add a backbone component to our online store. There are many fly-by-night operations online that lack customer service and credibility. Today we are host to the largest fine lingerie store in Colorado," says Alicia.

Helping Others and Creating Sense of Community
Alicia actively works with underprivileged women and breast cancer survivors in her community and is a self-proclaimed "feel good junkie." Throughout the year, Alicia pairs with Dress for Success to fit disadvantaged women with new and properly fitted bras. She has fitted hundreds of women in Denver, Colorado Springs, Seattle and New York - and future cities are on the calendar!

Alicia also is a vocal advocate for breast cancer survivors, partnering with the American Cancer Society to fit women with post-mastectomy bras. She also networks with breast cancer clinics to ensure mastectomy patients have a place to get properly fitted for a bra. She employs five trained mastectomy fitters on her staff.

"It's my calling to nurture everyone I meet and take the time to truly care about each and every person - customers, employees and all!" says Alicia. "That is the secret to our success - we do our best to make every person that graces our lives feel special."

Becoming a Recognized and Leading Authority on All Things Lingerie

Alicia has been recognized locally and nationally for her amazing efforts.
Locally, in November 2009, Alicia's hard work and caring spirit lead her to win the Leading Lady Award by Ladies Who Launch in Denver, an annual award that recognizes an exceptional female entrepreneur in Colorado. In September 2010, Alicia also was named as one of the Outstanding Women in Business by the Denver Business Journal, an honor awarded to only a handful of women each year, and she was a finalist in the 2010 Stevie Awards for Women "Women Helping Women" award. With her Dress for Success Bra Fitting national tour annually, Alicia has fit over a 1000 women less fortunate in NYC, Albnay, Los Angeles, Houston, Seattle, Colorado Springs and Denver. Her goal is to make women feel confident underneath their clothing for job interviews. She was recognized on the Home Page of AOL Careers in June 2011.

Nationally, Pampered Passions Fine Lingerie was named as a 2010 "Bride's Choice" recipient by WeddingWire. Later that year, Pampered Passions Fine Lingerie was named Best Lingerie Store by Intima, the leading lingerie and intimate apparel industry magazine.

Alicia is a recognized authority and industry luminary on all things lingerie. As the National Intimate Apparel Examiner for Examiner.com she writes daily about lingerie industry and intimate apparel fashion trends. She has been a featured expert and guest on Fox, ABC and NBC stations as well as in Cosmopolitan magazine, the Home Page on Valentine's Day 2011 of AOL Small Business, US Weekly, iVillage and other leading lingerie blogs and sources. She is a member of the IAC, Intimate Apparel Association.

Alicia and John Vargo celebrated the 10 year Anniversary of their business in July 2011.
Prior to becoming a lingerie entrepreneur, Alicia spent 23 years in the wine, beer and liquor industry as an advisor to the Governor. She also served on the Colorado Board of Agriculture and represented the 22 Colorado wineries.
In her spare time, Alicia enjoys playing classical guitar, reading inspirational and spiritual books, sipping on fine wine, and most of all spending time with her loving husband and business partner, John, and their four children who range in age from 16 to 21.

The Invisible Partnership

How to Work With Your Spouse Without Getting Divorced

In Australia, an estimated one in seven small businesses fail each year and for those in the first year of operation the figure is even higher. Now, imagine what happens when you are married to your business partner, and how this starts to affect your chances of success? You would be right in thinking that the odds are stacked against you. Not only due to today's tough economic times, but with every third marriage predicted to end in divorce. So, is it possible for life partners to successfully run a business?

A new book entitled The Invisible Partnership: How to Work with Your Spouse Without Getting Divorced offers some freshly astute, unconventional guidance and advice on how to successfully work with your spouse - without getting divorced. What further sets The Invisible Partnership apart, is the fact it's penned by a couple who have walked that very minefield of working and living together.

Co-owners of a thriving Sydney based business consultancy, Quantum Dynamics, Louise Woodbury and William de Ora have been working with small to medium sized businesses for over 17 years. Having been married for 16 years, the couple drew upon their professional and first-hand experience to write The Invisible Partnership.

The Invisible Partnership uncovers and exposes the hidden issues that exist when life partners are also business partners, such as power plays, covert behaviours, anger, frustration, disappointments, every day numbness and silent grieving which has become the norm. Ranging from the deeply personal to the downright comical, the book touches on the very essence of what makes a partnership work and leads the reader through the practical, simple, and yet profound steps toward building a business together.

Approximately 80% of small businesses in Australia are run by husband and wife, or partner teams. With small businesses reportedly representing up to 96 per cent of all businesses in the country, it is clear there is a huge number of couples trying to navigate through the many unique trials and tribulations of working and living together.

Louise says, "Too often, life partners in business end up working with professional consultants who have no personal experience in working with their life partner or have never actually run their own business. This is a mistake we made ourselves in our early years and learnt it the hard way.

"For example, people are commonly advised to keep home and work life separate. From our perspective this doesn't work. You each end up suppressing your feelings, never resolving issues, like a volcano waiting to erupt, and this then becomes your "normal" way of operating.

"One of easiest traps to fall into is wrongly believing that the rules for marriage will work for the business, and vice versa. Most life partners get this mixed up. Something else life partners working together should keep in mind is that the "seven year reality check" often becomes a three year reality check, simply because of the amount of time spent together, it's a 24/7, joined-at-the-hip relationship."

Earlier this year, Louise and William commissioned/conducted a survey on 100 Australian couples who work together, which showed that the number one place for discussing business was in the car either going to or coming home from work (82% of respondents). The research also identified meal times as the next most popular place for these discussions (71%), and over half said they held these during their holidays. Even the bedroom isn't sacred, with over one third admitting they allowed business talks to happen while they were in bed.

In their professional coaching capacity, Louise and William say they too often see highly competent, intelligent women who have joined their husband's business but aren't working to their strengths. Instead they are expected to be anything from the glorified secretary to the '"Jill of All Trades".

William says, "In this situation, not only does the working relationship suffer, but so too does the success of the business. It can only lead to frustration and resentment.

"The philosophy of The Invisible Partnership is that when couples work together in their own business, they both should have equal leadership and responsibility - with no compromise or domination by either party. Through writing this, we hope to assist both men and women to take their rightful place in the world of business with their life partners."

The Invisible Partnership aims to help couples uncover and tackle those blind spots and unspoken issues, ultimately enabling two people to work together and still love each other every day- without having to compromise.

Cake-Love a yummy partnership

Couple turn their little idea to a big reality!

Cake-Love

By Tanya Lacy Couples Success Magazine

Eva - Mum & Entrepreneur. Bill - Father, Business Man, Photographer, Entrepreneur
Both love coffee, cakes and business.
Cake Making and Business = Cake Love

"Would you like something to eat?" is what you are asked by Eva if you are having a coffee at her place. She is the ultimate hostess.
A school Mum and a friend of mine. This woman packs a mighty punch for such a petite woman. Her energy and enthusiasm for making, baking, designing is simply incredible, not to mention her skill.

Our sons go to school together and I remember chatting to her one day in the school yard about the cakes she'd been making and decorating for friends and family. I then went to her place one day. "Look at this one", she said pulling out a magnificent work of art. Green icing and monkey's hanging from palm tree's. "This is a little birthday cake I've made for such and such" I was floored.

Her skill is breath taking; and it hadn't gone unnoticed. Her husband Bill has been exceptionally supportive, building her website and doing deliveries and collections of ingredients and all her cake making needs. Both members of this business couple are artistic and entrepreneurial. One day, over a glass of wine, Bill announced that he was working with Eva to find just the right place for her to bake her cakes, serve her clients and fill her orders. "She needs a dedicated place to do her cake decorating and teach cake decorating workshops" he would encourage.

Now some months on, I am inspired to share that their dream has become a reality. They've found a perfect location, for Cake-Love.
A cafe serving up scrumptious cakes from banana bread, to mouth watering New York cheesecake. (This with a short black is sensational!).

My husband and I visited Cake-Love today, sampled the coffee and took a look around at what it has become. In the space immediately nex to the cafe is shop. A place where cake making and decorating items are for sale.

And as Eva was curiously asking me, "what do you think of the coffee and would you like something to eat?", Bill was explaining to my husband that he has his kitchen bench tops at home back.

We wish their adventures every success. You can pop in, have a look at their catalogue of cakes and the incredible variety of ways to decorate.
There is nothing Eva won't tackle. Cars, Ball's, 80th Cakes, I've even seen a cake with an edible picture of a couple on it. Who know's what their anniversary cakes will look like for their business in a few years time. All I can say is with the word of mouth and taste in the mouth, Cake-Love is sure to be a stellar success!

For on-line orders and finding out more go to www.cake-love.com.au. The site is updated regularly with latest pictures of Eva's incredible edible works of art! No matter where you are in the world cake-love has something for you if you love cake.

Get a business coach, take a self improvement program, do a couples in business program
attend a retreat with yourselves and get feedback and skill share.

7. Sweeter Talk
How are you speaking to yourself? How are you speaking to your partner?
What are you thinking? Is there too much gunk in your mind? Evaluate your self talk.
