THE BOOKS THAT HAVE CHANGED MY HUSBAND'S LIFE

My husband Ted is not a fanatic reader like me, so his list is a lot more discriminating.

Long before Dummy and Idiot were popular concepts for self-help books, John Muir and Tosh Gregg wrote "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive: A Manual of Step-By-Step Procedures for the Complete Idiot". Ted credits this volume with keeping his cars on the road long after the rest of the world may have given up on them. And, I have to say, even now in 2007, our newest car is from the 80s, so that book taught him a lot of basics that he's been able to apply to other cars. (Like our Mustang, Mercedes, Trooper and Volvo.)

Richard Henry Dana's classic "Two Years Before the Mast" was a great first step into literature for a young man who liked boats and sailing. Dana portrays life in a much simpler and in many ways much more difficult time. It can help us in the modern world to put our problems into perspective. Do we have enough food for the week? Do we have fresh water to drink? They're simple but you can't live without them.
